How to Save Money at Savannah Veterinary Internal Medicine & Intensive Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Woods and his staff are extraordinary! From the moment I walked into his office I was put at ease; I just knew that this is where we needed to be to get the help my cat Little Lou needed, I had already heard such great things about them. In speaking to Dr. Woods and his staff, I could tell that they were going to do everything that they could to help Little Lou get better. She was recently diagnosed with IMHA (a severe anemia) she went downhill very fast. We first went to a specialty hospital for treatment, we were told that her treatment did not work and she would not make it more than a few days, so I brought her home, it was devastating! Long story short, I am so grateful that we found Dr. Woods and his team and that they were able to fit her in as an emergency the same week. Dr. Woods has so much knowledge about her disease and explained the disease and different treatments to me, plus he thought that she could get better, he changed around her medications, and we gave it a shot. She is now doing much better and on the road to recovery! I just can not say enough good things about everyone in this office. I will never take my Lou anywhere else!

Dr. Woods and his wonderful staff have been taking care of our pit mix Bella who has Cushing's Disease and thyroid issues. Dr. Woods really knows his stuff, and he goes way above and beyond to take care of his patients. On more than one occasion, he has called me after hours to make sure I had the information I needed about Bella, and never makes me feel rushed on the phone. He is now seeing our cat socks for respiratory issues. We highly recommend his practice! We are extremely thankful for their care and love for our animals. We truly cannot thank them enough.

Dr. Woods and team were very friendly and thorough. They took the time to explain things and made sure we understood what our options were. We (and our cat Peanut) were very satisfied with the help we received and thankful they helped us figure out how to better help our cat and treat his kidney disease. Highly recommend.

Dr. Woods and his team are extraordinary at what they do and are all around kind, compassionate and hard working human beings. From the minute you start services with them it is as if they’ve committed to be with you along the journey to better health and well-being for your furry family member, not just for that single appointment, but “in it” with you. My Belle, a 10 year old Great Dane whom has pretty much been with me through all of life’s trials and triumphs, and pretty much by my side most days - at work, on the road for work, travel, fun times, etc.. - who is a joy and sun ray to not only my day, but our family’s and to those she meets was diagnosed with a rare lymphoma, bi-lateral lymphoma of her kidneys. I believe this was diagnosed because although I came in with concerns for her cough, Dr. Woods made the decision to do an ultrasound and detected the abnormalities with her kidneys… sigh. After her diagnosis she needed to be immediately seen into an oncologist specialist for the cancer and she was heading into renal failure. I know that she wouldn’t have been seen THE NEXT DAY without them helping to make it possible. Last week we almost lost her..but today Belle is stable and will continue treatments in Charleston as long as she has a good quality of life and SVIM and their team will continue to be there as well along the way as we enjoy whatever amount of time she is here with us.

Dr. Woods and his Staff are phenomenal! They are honest, transparent and genuinely care for your pet. We drove from Bluffton, SC to see Dr. Woods and I highly recommend this practice to anyone seeking care in Internal Medicine for their fur babies!
