How to Save Money at Whatley- Kinney Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had been using this Vet for 10 years and the quality of service has always been off and on, not very consistent at all. The second to the last time I went, I was asked to bring in a fecal sample to test for worms for my dogs. I could see the worms in the sample, but the tech's behavior was as if she was so grossed out from taking a sample that she did not an adequate amount and the test came back negative for worms. She hurriedly through out the sample so there was no chance to have another tech help us. I left and ended up going to out secondary Vet a few days later with another sample and my dog did indeed test positive for worms and was treated. Our last visit here was the final, we brought our new puppy in to get her puppy shots, and ear looked at for an infection. We overheard the counter ladies discussing another clients account when they said, " Just charge her the $200 max price, she always pays with no question". We waited over half an hour after showing up to our appointment five minutes early with just us in the waiting room. Once in the examination room the Vet barely look at our animal and said she probably had an ear infection and with her puppy shots it'd be... $200, we left right then and there.

We appreciate Dr. Kinney, Elaine & the entire staff who has been taking care of all of our dogs since 2002, when we moved to Rome. We came with adult dogs then added puppies who started their care at Whatley Kinney. We have had some strange things happen to them from getting air-lifted by a hawk to kicked in the head by a horse then finally cancer 😡, Dr. Kinney has seen us through every step & still is. The loving care & compassion that they all provide assures me that taking all my babies to Whatley Kinney is the best choice for us! We love & appreciate all of the staff, including new ones who have joined ❤️

I took my dog, Olive, to this practice when she wasn't eating, drinking, and her back legs were splaying. She was also walking with her back toes folded under at times. The staff was friendly! They treated my girl very well with compassion and sweetness! They were able to diagnose, take bloodwork, and send her home with medications and recommendations within an hour. They offered me tissues when I cried. I would definitely take her back! Also, my pooch pooped in the exam room out of nerves and they cleaned it up and told me not to worry about it...it happens. They care about pets! Happy to report that Olive is feeling better already. The puffiness in her face has gone down. Her appetite and thirst have returned and she's running around like she used to!

Very friendly staff and great Vet. They were very clean and thorough with my cats treatment and care. A little expensive but it's definitely worth the peace of mind knowing my animals are taken care of and not misdiagnosed. They take care credit so there are payment plans available. I really like this place and I'll be back.

Great, friendly, knowledgeable folks. Never been to see them before. I called on a Monday and they were able to help my hurt dog a few hours later! Thanks so much!
