How to Save Money at Northwest Georgia Veterinary Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I normally don’t review places but the staff here was absolutely amazing. I have extreme anxiety to the point where I usually can’t leave the house without someone coming with me but when my pup started showing signs of being really sick, I forced myself to take him in. I’m so happy that the whole process was a lot easier and not as stressful as it could have been. Everything they did showed just how much they cared. The staff was extremely friendly and they made sure that I was both well informed on what was going on with my pup as well as comfortable with any treatment they recommended before moving forward. They kept me informed of what the price was expected to be through the whole duration and patiently explained any risks involved with potential treatments or in the event that CPR was needed. By the time I paid, I was completely confident that my dog would be just fine. The receptionist even walked me to my truck since it was 2 in the morning to make sure I got inside safely. I cannot recommend this place enough. (Jax was completely in love with the staff too, so that’s a win.)

DO NOT TAKE YOUR BABY HERE! I had to take my cat here over the holiday weekend due to him vomiting blood. The receptionist staff was kind and understanding and immediately took us back to a private room, which is the ONLY reason I gave them a star at all. It took almost an hour for anyone to come in the room to do his intake and get all the details on what was going on. Another 30 minutes go by and the vet finally comes in but hasn’t even examined my cat yet. She did not communicate with the tech on why we were there so I had to explain everything again. She finally examines my cat and does several X-rays after another hour and comes back in. She was very blunt and not caring at all. It seemed like I was inconveniencing her by being there. She basically told me what she saw, told me what they were going to do and was just going to leave it at that without giving me any other options on possible treatment and course of action. What they found was completely unrelated to the reason I brought him in and they never found out why he was vomiting blood. They took advantage of me in my stressed and emotional state instead of allowing me to make an educated decision on what was best for my cat. If I had been in my right mind I would have taken my cat home and taken him to his regular vet after the holiday instead of complying and allowing them to charge up a rather large bill at my expense. Although his situation was urgent, it was not life threatening and could have been handled after the holiday weekend. I did not feel like I had the option to decline the treatment she forced on my cat and was left with no other option than to let them admit him for 21 hours and pay 3 times the cost in vet care for a third of the hospitality his regular vet would have provided. My cat was absolutely terrified and put through a very uncomfortable and stressful procedure multiple times throughout the night and following day. I only got one phone call from the vet and it wasn’t until she was leaving to go home at the end of her shift. Once again she told me what the plan was without asking me for my permission on what she was doing to my cat. Needless to say I was glad he was being passed on to the vet on the next shift, who was much more pleasant and patient. I had to call to get an update on my cat the next evening and when I did was finally informed on the situation properly and was given time and the chance to ask questions. When I arrived to pick up my cat, it took another 30 minutes just for them to get him ready to be discharged even though they had an hour and a half notice that I was on my way to get him. He was released without any paperwork or documentation on what was done other than the invoice after I paid the bill in full. I wasn’t given any instruction on what to expect. No instruction on medication dosage adjustments, diet changes, NOTHING. I finally get my cat home and he practically collapses from fatigue and stress. I notice his rear end is covered in liquid feces. It looked like he had been sitting in his own fecal matter for who knows how long and all they did was wipe him off without properly cleaning him. I was so disgusted with the care my cat received from the time he was admitted to the time he was discharged and will not be returning to this facility ever! And I will make sure everyone I know stays far away from this facility as well.

I’m EXTREMELY grateful to the staff. they’re so kind, welcoming, knowledgeable, and thorough. My service dog Pierre was in excellent hands and they took extra steps, and precautions which I appreciate more than anything especially since my boy wasn’t acting like himself. He’s doing so much better thanks to them I couldn’t be more pleased with their efficiency and work! ♥️🐾

I just want to say how much we appreciate the staff at this clinic. Our Yorkie Beau was very sick during the weekend when our regular vets office was closed. They took him in and diagnosed him with pancreatitis and aspiration pneumonia. They admitted him and kept him over the weekend and treated him with all the tools they had to help him. We thought we was going to lose him but they didn’t give up. They used everything they had available there to help him until he started to turn around. If they had not been available to help him I don’t think we would still have him with us. We are very thankful for everyone that helped our Beau make it through this.

I called these kind folks n from the moment I called forward it was everything on point!! Passionate, kind, patient, just all around a good experience... except for the fact I was there to put my beloved, lab mix, Mr. Cedo Bonds, of 11 years to rest. (6/21/23) I definitely recommend this place of business if you want you n your fur baby to be treated well. They got you!! Thankyou so much to the NWG EMERGENCY VET TEAM!!
