How to Save Money at Fair Oaks Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Holland and Samantha were thorough, kind, and caring. They took the time to get to know my hen's health history, thoroughly checked her out, and involved me in the care decisions, even inviting me to look through the microscope to see what was going on. They were kind and sensitive to my hen's comfort and very caring in her treatment. They were patient and went above and beyond to get me everything I needed, including calling me back the following day with additional information and to answer my questions. It was one of the best veterinary experiences I've had.

I just moved here from Virginia, and I'm happy to say I've found my fur babies new vet! My 11 year old chihuahua needed a dental cleaning, and from scheduling, to the procedure, I was treated so well. Dr. Holland's staff is very upbeat and the entire staff from front desk to the doctor herself treated my pet like she was their own pet. The price was extremely fair, my dog no longer has swamp breath, and I even found out during my dogs visit, that Dr. Holland sees exotic pets like reptiles and small furry animals. I have 2 guinea pigs and a leopard gecko who will come to see Dr. Holland soon!

Dr. Holland has seen my pets for many years now. She is an excellent vet, and even sees exotic pets. She has seen all of my previous rabbits, snakes, rats and currently my ferret and bearded dragon. She also sees my dogs and cat, and my cat isn't nice when he goes but she still treats him amazingly. Her staff is always patient with my animals, and her staff are well trained and educated. My dogs wag their tails the whole time they are there and love going. They give my dogs cheese treats and use small needles for the vaccines, and i have seen her change to a brand new one so its more sanitary and very sharp. I don't have to drag my dogs thru the door like at previous vets. It's always clean and never smells like animals.

I don't know what happened to this place. I came a little over a year ago and I could sing their praises. Now, the only reason I would ever come back is for the nurse. She is so helpful and kind, understanding and generous. The Doctor was very mean and not helpful or sensitive at all. She seemed agitated to be there the whole visit. She was very condescending, she didn't seem to know what the heck she was talking about and proceeded to lecture me on things I already knew or things that were irrelevant to the issue that brought us to her in the first place. It seemed I knew more than she did. Heck, Google helped me find more answers. I despised the way she manhandled my sick fur baby, too. Either way, she was not helpful. She was not kind. Paying was a waste of money. Went to another vet and they were the best. I will continue going to the other vet. And at my pets passing, the OTHER vet sent a card all signed by the staff and a pawprint of my baby to have for free. That kindness was desperately needed. Fair oaks. Learn a lesson with this and try to remember kindness and patience goes a long way.

Went in for a grooming appointment for my 16 yr old westie and got aggressively told that my dog was in pain and dying all from a couple coughs. Dr Holland then said to have him put down sometime that week because she was leaving on vacation. I asked her to relay the info to my mother and just left a short desperate message about needing to call her and make a decision that day of. She then refused service and told us we can no longer take him there and to go to BluePearl. We instead went to Kennestone Animal Hospital (a much more modern vet) and they told us his Heart murmur and kidney disease was stable and not that bad. I guess Dr Holland really wanted to go on that vacation.
