How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Processes and lack of flexibility to accept payments takes precedence over urgent care of a dog; the patient. Whereas my dog obviously needs an X-ray to determine why he is limping, and I am standing at the front counter ready to pay the "next level wellness program" they were unwilling to compromise their processes and system capability to make the appointment. They were fine with me looking for alternative care as my dog limped out the door with me.

I have taken my lab to Banfield for 5+ years. Since COVID, they have been very strict on in room appointments which I understand. I have an anxious dog and when I called to schedule his latest appointment, I requested an in room visit. I was told that this couldn't be accommodated. I agreed to drop off and moved on. I dropped him off at 9am for his appointment. I mentioned to the person at drop off that my dog was very anxious around new people. Almost 6 hours go by and I finally receive a call from Banfield that they were able to do his vaccinations however nothing else. She then stated that moving forward they will only treat him at in room appointments and under sedation due to his anxiety. It broke my heart to know that instead of calling me a few hours after drop off, they made him suffer in a cage for almost 6 hours before even making me aware that there was this significant of an issue. I can only imagine how anxious and scared my dog was. If they would have spent a few minutes playing with him he would have quickly warmed up to them but my gut is that when he wouldn't comply, they simply put him back in the cage. I have come to the realization that Banfield simply only cares about money and how many appointments they can complete in a day and not about the pet itself. I am in the process of cancelling my Banfield Wellness Plan and will be finding a new vet who actually cares about the wellbeing of the animal vs. quota.

They are overcharging my wellness plan, I was reviewing my charges for the plan... not only do I have an additional random charge but they increased my monthly pay as well $15... And all of a sudden their site is crashing when I am looking over my charges.... weird. I tried on my phone and laptop and my account won't pull up... Also, my dog had a comprehensive check up earlier this month and they said everything was fine, I then get a call 2-3 days later stating she had whipworms... So, whoopy more money to pay...It was odd because if my dog is there all day (like a 9-5) wouldn't they find that out through all the test they have taken? In all, why does banfield as a whole feel like it is okay to LIE and STEAL from their clients? What good does that do for us and you personally? They haven't changed and they have always been this bad since I was a kid with a family dog... and the fact that I am still seeing and experiencing their bad service as I am now older is absurd. Banfield needs to get their priorities straight.

We absolutely LOVE this location. When our fur baby contracted Parvo at only 4 months old, we thought the worst. But Banfield saved our little guy and checks on him frequently. We are forever grateful.

Absolutely hate this place. They have told me for years my dog has allergies, come to find out she has a collapsed trachea. They just want your money. The staff could care less about you or your pet. I took my dog to another vet and she was much happier the entire time. Meanwhile, i waited over 30 minutes for banfield to forward over her records. If you care about your pet, please, go somewhere else. These people are terrible. Run the other way
