How to Save Money at Fort Oglethorpe Pet Wellness Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

STAY AWAY!!!! I'd give this place minus 100 stars if I could! I had taken in my elderly cat who was having skin issues caused by fleas some time ago. Dr. Martin prescribed Simparica, and Chewy called his office to verify the prescription. I questioned his choice, as the box clearly says it's for dogs 3-11 pounds, but was assured by his office that it could also be used for cats. Thankfully my little girl had no problems with it; she passed away from renal failure at over 20 years of age. I adopted another cat, and he developed a serious flea problem - when I bathed him the water was actually red! I still had half a box of the Simparica left, so after his bath I gave him one of the pills. By the next morning he was uncoordinated and couldn't stand up. I called Dr. Martin's office and was told I couldn't bring him in because they were having emergency surgery. I ended up taking him to the ER, where the vets couldn't believe that a DOG flea treatment had been prescribed for a cat! Apparently dog flea treatments contain ingredients that can be FATAL to cats, yet that idiot is prescribing it for cats purely based upon the weight listed on the box! There is NO excuse for that - Chewy has every pet medication you could ever need, and there are plenty of products he could have chosen, but no - he chose to prescribe a product made for dogs. I've spend hundreds of dollars so far on treatment for this poor baby, which - being a disabled senior citizen I can ill afford. Is Dr. Martin going to reimburse me for that, seeing as it was his ignorance that caused the problem? I wonder how many cats have died because of his stupidity! You can be sure I'll be reporting him to the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine!

Dr. Durden has been the doctor for my cats and dogs for a number of years, and he is THE BEST. I could write pages on everything that he has done to make my pets' lives better and he has even saved the lives of a few of them. He is kind, patient, gentle, concerned, honest, and extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the health and well-being of both cats and dogs. The facility is great, and Dr. Martin and the staff are very welcoming and friendly as well.

My regular vet, Dr Jones, with Hixson Pet Wellness Center, referred me to one of her colleagues, when I took my senior pup, Bambi, to her, because my pup could not stand up on her front legs. Due to Bambi's blood work being all over the charts, the choice to use medication was not a good choice. Instead, Dr Jones told me about Laser treatment, something I had never heard of. She said Dr Jones has the equipment to do this treatment, and she sent me to him. After the first treatment, I could tell that my girl, Bambi, was trying to get her mobility back. She's had 4 treatments, along with chiropractic treatments, and it's AMAZING at what Bambi is able to do, now. She's up, walking, going up her doggy stairs to HER place on the couch. I have my girl back, and Bambi has her mobility back. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr Martin and his staff for your pet care needs. And if you've never tried the laser treatment with the chiropractic treatment, for inflammation, in your pet, consider it ! It's AMAZING ❤️

This is a fantastic clinic and I highly recommend them. Even if you live a ways off, the love and care your furry family member will receive is worth the drive. Dr. Martin and the entire staff go out of their way to ensure you understand exactly what is needed to keep your pet healthy. Ashley is always kind & patient answering any questions or concerns when I call to schedule. I couldn't be happier with the care my girl received, and the education I received to keep her in good health. Five stars for sure!
