How to Save Money at Animal Urgent Care of Dunwoody

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My pup Riley came in very sick and was diagnosed with pneumonia. They were able to prioritize her health and give her the best care. She is back to being her normal self and cuddling with her food bowls. The staff is all so friendly and kind. They helped me out a lot during this stressful time.

I don’t think I can express in words how amazing and wonderful the staff here is and how much gratitude and appreciation I have for them. We are from out of state and visiting family, we originally took our dog to a vet close by due to possible uti. The other vet shaved her area so close it caused the worse case of razor burn Ive seen in 36 years of my life as well as an infection of the skin. Our dog wouldn’t urinate or stand for 24 hours due to severe pain. Not only was the staff here completely sympathetic and understanding on the phone but in person they were even more caring and explained everything every step of they way. 24 hours after they helped our girl and medication they prescribed shes 75% normal. I just want to say thank you and if we ever need anything your the only place we will be coming back to.

Have now been here twice with an urgent need for my dog. Staff is friendly. Place is clean and welcoming. Dr. Fisher gave alternate treatment options as well as recommendations for future treatment. Overall great and caring place if your pet is in urgent need.

We did not have a good experience here because of the lack of transparency and professionalism. Came in with my dog as an urgent visit to treat a standard UTI. The vet tech took our dog to the back room and said they’d give her a look over and come back with an estimate before doing anything. They then come back to tell us they’d not only made several attempts to pull urine out of her, they’d also chosen to do an invasive ultrasound and the bill was $324 at this point. Work was already performed and they didn’t even give us a heads up or ask if I was ok with any of the extra measures or them handling my dog that way. The estimate didn’t even include medication which they weren’t willing to estimate a price on until they’d run more tests. When we raised this issue they offered $25 off as if they negated the $200+ of services they went ahead and performed without our consent. The visit ended up taking over 2 hours. They held our dog in the back until we paid the bill even though her urine sample was collected in the first 15 minutes. They then only gave us 10 days of medication (not the full course) and said we’d have to make an appointment with our primary vet to “see if it worked” and get ANOTHER urinalysis. If you need your pet checked out and want to have some kind of say in the process or feel somewhat informed as to what is happening to your pet, or just not get scammed… this would not be the place to go.

I got home at 7:15pm to find my little girl limping and screeching in pain. She kept on falling over as she was walking and crying. I called Animal Urgent Care of Dunwoody and they saw her 15 minutes later. The staff was great and the vet was amazing. I was a mess and they made me feel very comfortable. After an x-ray was taken it turned out it was was only a bad sprain. They bandaged it and gave her pain medicine. I am very appreciative of the care they gave her. Three days later she was back to normal. I highly recommend this practice if you need emergency care for your pet.
