How to Save Money at Affordable Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is awesome and has very caring and friendly staff. Super inexpensive meds too! My babies like it here

Used to love this place when Dianne was the “face of the front”. Sadly, I have seen such a decline the past few years. All I can say now is, AV no longer has an Autism friendly staff. I understand that I have speech and communication issues, and for about 10 years, there was no problem with how I spoke…until Matt. All I was trying to do was reschedule an appointm,, dated ent because I had been exposed to Covid, which I and mistreated, by Matt and then Veronica, consecutively. To think, I could have potentially avoided all of this and saved myself a ton of frustration if I would have just kept that appointment. I guess thats what I got for doing the responsible thin saiddone, I should really be thanking AV, Veronica especially. I’ve never been happier with the services I’m now getting from 2nd Ave. Animal Hospital. Simple folks! Avoid AV if you happen to have any speech, communication or special needs issues. THE STAFF CAN BE QUITE INTOLERANT. UPDATE: 07/27/23 REBUTTAL TO AV’s RESPONSE I find it curious and slightly comical that you say you tried to reach out to me with no success…I will gladly post a screenshot of the email, dated JUL 15, 2022, we exchanged. The one where I ask you all what “abuse” you are referring to and attempt to educate you on Autistic “verbal stimming”. The very email that I never received a response to, other than forwarding our records. So, you’re gonna have to miss me with that nonsense. Plain and simple; AV was only interested in one side of the story, your side. In doing this, you willingly choose to stay ignorant. I cannot and will not give one Planck length of respect for that and I will damn sure never recommend your services to anyone…ever…

Having to get your dog spayed or neutered just to get a dental cleaning here is ridiculous. It is a REQUIREMENT. Why? There is no liability to worry about there if you aren’t keeping a bunch of strange dogs together in a room. Seems like a way to squeeze more money out of people. Also, I’m not paying a consultation fee just to find out how much a dental cleaning would cost. At least give me an estimated price range. This place is a cancer to the well-being of animals. Avoid. RESPONSE TO OWNER’S REPLY: I don’t care what your opinions on spaying/neutering are. That should have no impact on a dental cleaning which has nothing to do with a dog’s reproductive anatomy. It’s none of your business what owners choose to do with their pets, and it’s disgusting that you would refuse critical service to someone because they don’t align with your views, when finding affordable vet services is extremely difficult to do. You should be ashamed of yourself.

My puppy was neutered at this location! We paid a fraction of what we did at my first vet and were just as happy with the results. They also microchipped him and were much more informative on the registration process. Would absolutely recommend!

The people in the office are super friendly and have a family like vibe with each other. Prices are great and they did an amazing job on my dogs surgery. Highly recommend. I've been to many vets in the area and this place was by far one of the better experiences
