How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my 2 month old kitten there. For their check up and vaccinations. They said that she was healthy. There was nothing wrong then 2 days later. I noticed that she has fleas. Now both my cats have fleas. I'm having such a hard time getting rid of it. Also, I've tried calling them so many times and no one's answering or returning my phone calls. That's just frustrating. Because, how are you not gonna have a clean environment that we're bringing our animals too. And then no one's answering the phone, the phone. All in all, I do not recommend. I've used banned field in the past. But I definitely will not be going back. I'm gonna have to find a new vet. And cancel my plan.

This is hands down the worst of all the Banfields. We move a lot and have been seen at quite a few. They rarely answer the phone ( I'm sure they are under staffed, I get it). I literally called for 3 hours from the minute the store opened with no answer. Then I drove to the store and called while standing in the lobby. They had the ringers off on all the phones. When I asked if my Pup could be seen, they responded that they were booked and to try calling in the morning. Ya, the exact thing I had previously tried to do! They don't call to tell you about wellness plan services that are due. The veterinarian is brief and brushes you off quickly because he is over booked. Instead of getting an appointment I get told to go try other pet hospitals. I don't want to pay a million dollars to go to a pet hospital, that is why I purchased the wellness plan. They need to hire more people to ensure members can be seen in a reasonable amount of time.

Very disorganized. My dog had an appointment and I was told would be an in-person appointment, swift, and would NOT be a drop-off. We took our schnauzer there today for said appointment, and they said it would be a drop-off. My dog is 15 years old, heart challenges, and has awful anxiety. They should follow up with a phone call ahead of time if they are going to change appointment settings. I’m in the military, and we have been to several Banfields across the United States based on my military assignment. This is by far the worse Banfield. Do yourself a favor and find another vet. Also, we have had their wellness plan for over ten years.

We have been member for over 8 years, in the past three years we have noticed a sharp decline in customer service. For the first couple of years we would call and get an answer, scheduling was easy, and we loved our care. Over the past years it's been nearly impossible to get ahold of someone, when we do we're always being put on hold, and appointments are weeks out. On top of that because this is a corporation, when you try to cancel you spend hours on hold lines. We cancelled after spending over 6 hours on hold lines, find out that they didn't in fact cancel and now we are having to go through it all again. I would love to recommend them because for several years they took wonderful care of our dogs, and every time we are in office they are wonderful. But unfortunately due to understaffing they cant keep up with the demands of the area and can provide customer service or help when needed.

I like the Banfield Clinic, the staff is friendly and helpful. However, it seems that they always find something extra to charge for outside of what's covered by their Wellness Plan. In which they spring those charges on you last minute. Know that if you have your pet spayed or neutered under the plan, there is an additional fee for a special collar & pain meds that have to be paid out of pocket and they don't tell you this until a day or 2 prior to the appointment, when they call to confirm. They also can't tell you prices upfront, you won't know until services have been rendered. Medicines for pain or illness are not included in the wellness plan.
