How to Save Money at Gaines Shoal Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The entire staff makes us feel like family. Most Vets and Techs are lary of big dogs, not these folks and Dr. Rankin is amazing with both our GSD and our Siberian Husky. They understand about the working class budget and always shoot straight when it comes to the health of our fur babies. Great team ,they have been our Clinic for 17 yrs , compassionate when we had to say good bye to our older dogs and now with our new big babies. Always go the extra mile. THANK YOU for all you do💙🐕‍🦺

Disappointing experience there recently. To be fair the people I dealt with [Vet Tech and Front desk staff] were new to my previous experience. I have going to Gaines School Animal Hospital for over 17 years. They ...WERE... wonderful. The entire team from intake, techs and veterinarians were professionals. They were patient with our animals [3 dogs] and compassionate when difficult care was needed. Last week my daughter was the recipient of an unplanned litter of feral cats. With the heat and the mother's poor recovery we took them to Gaines School Vet. The palpable "cold tolerance" without compassion was an unwelcomed experience during a difficult time. Once in the exam room the tech (who refused to assist us in transferring the kittens and their mother) we were informed that the doctor needed blood work and x-ray sight unseen. When we informed the tech that these were feral cats we were just trying to help she said "well how much are you looking to spend?" She scurried out of the exam room. A seemingly more compassionate veterinarian finally arrived after we negotiated "300.00 care ransom". We ultimately paid 68.00 for a physical examination and apathy. A week later...without spending 700.00 in care the mother cat is thriving..nursing her kittens...and we have adoption homes for 3 of the five kittens. Looking for a new veterinarian care setting for our family.

I used to take my pups for Pawtropolis for grooming, but when our favorite groomer left we had to find someone new! The groomer was amazing with my 2 aussies. I even messed up and was a little late for the normal drop off window. Despite this, she still took the time to sit down with my pups before taking them back to make sure they were comfy and to chat with me about what i wanted. The time from drop off to pick up was SO much quicker than pawtropolis, my dogs look fantastic, and the price was better! I can’t speak for their vet services, but I would 100% recommend them for grooming:)

We love EVERYTHING about Gaines School Animal Hospital! Everyone who works there is kind, compassionate, and go above and beyond to deliver the absolute best care to our pets. Thanks to their guidance and support our pets have thrived under their care. The individual attention the veterinarians and technicians give have contributed immensely to the healthy lives of our dog (16yrs) and cat 18 (yrs). There just aren't enough words to express our genuine appreciation and love for all who work at Gaines School Animal Hospital!
