How to Save Money at Animal and Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my 2 yr old Quaker Parrot to Dr. Murphy. I just wanted a basic exam and to gain knowledge on how to best care for our new addition. He was so kind and knowledgeable. I really appreciate how he took the time to educate me on care. He went over feeding (we're switchingto pellets) , and housing and entertaining our bird. He educated me on proper nutrition. I never felt pressured to receiving anything I did not want. They gave me a tour of the back. I saw the bird hotel, for future use. I couldn't have imagined a better experience. Everyone was so kind in the office.

I moved to St Petersburg from California with Toto and I was looking for the best avian vet in Florida. And I found him!! Dr. Joel Murphy is so knowledgeable, caring, and thoughtful. During our first visit, he went over his diet and history. He gave me excellent recommendations on Toto's diet, probiotics, and herbal supplements. I don't like to travel much because I don't like leaving Toto since caring for a bird can be complicated. Luckily, Dr Murphy offers boarding for birds and I have left Toto with him during a work trip. Dr Murphys staff went above and beyond, they sent me pictures and email updates each day which calmed my nerves. And per Toto's report card, he didn't miss me while I was away 🥺. Which honestly made me very happy and made me feel secure that Toto was being treated well. Toto loves Dr. Murphy and we are so lucky to have found him!

I never write reviews but once again this place deserves it. I have been bringing my dog Draco to this office for routing check ups, vaccinations and allergy issues and have never once had a bad experience. I called Wednesday of last week when my roommate got home and called me and said there was vomit everywhere and Draco is not being himself. I immediately called Dr. Murphy's office and they said even though they were closing in 20 minutes, the Dr would hang out to see him. Unfortunately I was over an hour away so they advised me to bring him first thing in the morning but if I felt he couldn't wait to bring him to an overnight ER which I did.. They did x rays and saw something in Draco stomach. He stayed overnight and they kept him comfortable till 8 am the next morning when I picked him up and brought him to Dr. Murphy. Dr Murphy himself called me within an hour and said whatever Draco has swallowed is in his intestines. Dr. Murphy said he would have his staff re-schedule some appointments and re arrange his day to perform Draco's emergency surgery. Draco did excellent in surgery and was home recovering the next day! Thank you Dr. Murphy and staff for saving Draco's life!

This office doesnt care about animals unless they make money from them. This office is in a plaza directly behind my house and they walk their SICK dogs behind my fence. This not only agitates my dogs, but all 5 of my dogs over the past 23 years have gotten diseases passed on to them that I have to take my dogs to a different vet to get taken care of. I have asked numerous times for them not to walk diseased animals to urinate on my fence and pass along whatever ailment they have to my dogs. I have called Zoning, the Health department, and even Animal control, and here's a surprise, no Government agency want's to do their job. They are horrible people, loud and rude yelling behind my house to each other across the parking lot, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Doesnt matter if I have people of family over for a Party, they still do it, with no care for me, my kids or my dogs. This office has been the only thing bad about living here, and they have done this for 23 years.

We have been taking our fur babies here for nearly 30 years; birds, dachshunds and cats. Always been appreciative of the care and maybe not so happy with the cost. But as any pet loving owner knows, we will do anything for our best friend. Recently our 12 y.o. dachshund had paralysis in his rear legs. A scary thing for any pet loving family. We heard MRI, Neurologist, and possible surgery. We talked to the vet about alternatives and we decided to seek chiropractic care (sort of against all advice.) Within 3 visits to the chiropractor, our dog was walking! Our advice is listen to the vets opinion but don't be afraid to seek alternative medicine. We sure are glad that we did! 🐾 🐾
