How to Save Money at Clay County Humane Society

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We took Sailor, a stray we found on the military base in Jacksonville Florida in to be neutered. When we picked him up the next morning, we found out he was a little girl, not a boy and she had babies back on base. We were able to catch all three of her babies and had them all adopted as a family to a former Marine who was retired. He had actually lost Sailor when he had stayed on the base months before we found her and when he found out we had located her, wanted her and all three of her babies! They all live now in their forever home just outside of Jacksonville. We are happy we were able to help out this family of cats and are greatful to know that Clay County Humane society played such a big part in saving Sailor and her babies! What a great place!

Had to put my amazing chocolate LabradorJack down last minute emergency. When I called, the lady at the desk @ 6: 30pm on a Friday she was was very insensitive more monotone computer. I was not a resident and my dog had never been seen there before. The protocol was based more on financial responsibility than patient satisfaction. I could not get an appointment for the next day and she said the doctors we're more apt to take locals and existing patients for an emergency. It was best to take him in emergency during their midnight clinic. Nevertheless I did not want my Labrador to suffer so I took him in on an emergency basis. When I got there everyone was pretty nice. It's not what I expected. I have never had to euthanasia any pet before and the decision as you may expect is very difficult. Am I being selfish to keep him alive he's almost 14 years old. The doctor and stuff was nice but I felt like they wanted to run tests that were just going to give me the same answers. In the end the ice finally broke and they were seem to be more compassionate than when I first walked to the door. I miss my Jack. They're facilities are beautiful clean well kept and their prices of very affordable. It wasn't the money for me It was the ethical decision and the hardest one I've ever had to make. I got Jack back a week later in a beautiful blue Stein. I will spread his ashes back in California over Laguna mountains. I don't wish the decision on anyone. He went in peace and that's all I can ask for. I would use a facilities again but I would only suggest their front desk lady that answers the phone be more considerate and passionate as us as pet owners know our dogs more than anyone regardless of blood test X-rays or any other lab test think they have to run. I don't think that having a stipulation of being a current patient should be a factor getting an appointment. A lot of us travel. We depend on reviews and responsible ethical veterinarians so that we can take our family pets with us. I would use them again I'm just posting this as a suggestion. RIP Jack 🐶

My kitty had surgery on October 13th. He was in perfect health. After the operation, I went to the clinic to pick up my cat. When I looked at him, I immediately noticed that his eyes were abnormal. I quickly turned to the front desk and asked what happened to my cat. One of the girls came forward indifferently and checked out the cat. She asked his coworker and they said that there is nothing and that it is normal to have watery eyes after the operation. I got the cat at 4:30 pm. My cat was sleepy at night, but the next morning I noticed acute problems in his eyes, especially on the left eye was completely closed, it was very red and swollen. I called the clinic to let them know what they did to my kitty. First, they said that they don't have time, but with my insistence, they said that I can go to the clinic, but they emphasized that I have to pay for the visit. The damage this clinic has done to my kitty is unimaginable. Kitty's eyes are injured and I went to my cat's previous clinic for treatment. The doctor has diagnosed a big wound inside my cat's eye. Now he is using medicine every two hours. If it doesn't get better by Monday, they will send me to a specialized eye clinic. I paid more than two hundred dollars and lost a whole day of my work. And I still have time for the next visit on Monday. I wish I never brought my cat to this clinic. Now I just pray that my cat will be like the first day. This clinic should be responsible for this horrible incident. I do not recommend this unprofessional center to anyone. It is a very dangerous place.

Clay Humane is the absolute best! The staff is extremely friendly and caring. Dr. Kossol is the best vet ever and hands down my favorite vet of all time! My baby Nigel was diagnosed with kidney disease November 2022, she gave us a step by step guide on how we could help him & always followed his kidney levels closely. If it weren't for her we would not have even known about the kidney disease & wouldn't have 10 more months with our baby. More time with him is the best gift I could've ever had. I miss my bestfriend everyday. He meant most to me in this world. ❤️ Thank you for all you have done for us Dr. Kossol! I will always remember the precious time we had with him and I will be forever grateful. 🙏

My rescue Chase and I have been on quite the adventure for the past 4 months. I live on the Northside of Jacksonville and an emergency a few weeks ago landed us at First Coast Affordable Vet Hospital. The vet there stated that his facility was not equipped to help me and referred me to Clay County Humane because my little guy needed to have surgery ASAP! Everyone was so amazing. When Dr. Broadhurst walked in the room, I just knew my fur baby was in the best hands. Surgery was a huge success and we are now on the mend. Thank you all for taking such wonderful care of my little guy.
