How to Save Money at Animal Specialty & Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My beloved dog, Pickle, found herself in a pickle after ingesting some mango pits, and the good humans at Animal Specialty & Emergency Center could not have taken better care of her, or been more kind to me. They managed to clear the obstruction – a situation that very easily could've killed my dog – and also treated Pickle for a raging urinary tract infection she came home with without charging me for an additional doctor consultation, which I really appreciated since the fees for the overnight care for the obstruction procedure were costly (worth every penny). From the vet techs to the doctors, and the lovely front desk staff, everyone treated me with understanding, respect, and a sense of humor when I was in a panic about Pickle's health. I am so thankful to have access to this incredible emergency vet, even if I hope to never have to see any of them ever again! I highly recommend them if you ever find yourself in need of emergency care for your four-legged friends.

I showed up here with my cat dead in my arms and the compassion and love that was shown from the staff means so much to me. We were turned away by the vet who provided meds that potentially put my cat into renal failure and Kellie and Mary took us in right away. They were caring, loving and patient. They didn't need to give us the time or attention they did because munch had already passed but they showed us love and empathy. They listened to us cry and tell his story. I wish they were a normal vet and not just emergency because this is who I want my cats to go to. It's worth the drive. A sad moment turned into me knowing he was in good hands. I've worked at a vet and I can tell this place is top notch even listening to how they sound to other pets while I was in the exam room. They love their job and love your pets. Thankful for you.

My first time here was for an emergency with my 5 month old Malinois pup this week who had pneumonia. The staff were extremely attentive and amazingly quick! Even though my dog needed to be admitted overnight I never felt in the dark about her care or treatment, and was 110% confident in the work and care they provided. She's now on the mend and I'm incredibly thankful for the work they did getting her to this point! I'd argue they provide better service than one would get at a normal human hospital or ER! If I could give more than 5 stars I would and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs ER care for their pets.

Our six year old male cat had a random urinary blockage, on a Friday night when all the other vets were closed. We haven’t had a good experience with vets at all in the past so we mostly just try to avoid them altogether by keeping our pets as healthy as we can. I knew a urinary blockage was a serious emergency, ending in a painful death so we brought my cat in. The staff and emergency vet were incredibly compassionate, and laid out several options for price point treatment levels, as well as euthanasia. They were realistic about prognosis, and about costs, which I really appreciated. In the end, we chose to do the more expensive option, because our cat had a pretty good prognosis. The upfront cost was right in the middle of what several internet searches suggested it would be. There was a care credit financing option. If you don’t have great credit you are looking at 33% interest rate at the time of this review though - but that’s care credits fault, not the vets. Our boy stayed two nights, and we got two phone calls a day with a status update and a report on any care adjustments. Because he had such a good prognosis and we caught the blockage really quickly, we ended up getting a 30% refund of our deposit -he was discharged earlier than expected. The care level was fantastic. The cost was expensive but on par with what the national average is, we ended up paying way less but only because we didn’t wait to get care. They even called for a follow up consultation to make sure home care was going well. If we could find a primary care vet like the staff here at the emergency vet, we’d be way more apt to use one. Thank you animal speciality for saving our cat, and for the compassionate staff that understood that we really didn’t have the money for the treatment. We weren’t made to feel less than for considering euthanasia.

Expensive, but that's to be expected. The quality of the personnel was excellent. From the front desk to the techs to the doctors, everyone was friendly, accommodating and made me feel like they care about our dog as much as we do. It was hard to leave our girl in someone else's hands but I knew she was getting the love and care she needed.
