How to Save Money at Whitehouse Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Speaking for my mom and I, we appreciate what y’all do but please consider keeping declawed cats under your supervision for a few days after a procedure. This procedure is harsh enough but really needs to be monitored better afterwards. I took this picture because my cat came home with her paws covered in blood and so was her cage. They didn’t look that bad when I picked her up from the vet but when I got home and looked at them, they were worse. She wasn’t running around when I took her out. She didn’t even wanna walk. I am very worried for my cat because I don’t need her to get an infection or it spread to the tissue. I understand the healing isn’t gonna be perfect, but it needs to be properly taken care of. I hope yall consider this and continue to do your best. Thank you.

I’ve been an off and on client at this clinic. Numerous of my pets have gone through here. I even had my first childhood dog euthanized here, that wasn’t as horrible of an experience but the appointment wasn’t with Dr. Thoma. I have not once had a good experience with Dr. Thoma. I made sure I came in with a checklist of things I knew were causing my pets issues. Even the small ones. Went over them with the tech. Tech agreed on most parts of what I was saying. I spend a lot of time with these animals, I know them better than anyone. They know me. But they can’t talk so I have to be their advocate. It’s very frustrating being told by an experienced vet that what I know is causing my dog some discomfort and could be diagnosed if you would just listen. It was honestly embarrassing, showing all the symptoms and being told “well I’ve seen worse.” I didn’t even bother mentioning the biggest concern for my cat because I couldn’t be belittled like that. Talked down to. I was basically snubbed because of my age. I have experience in the vet medicine field. Might not be years but I know what to look for and I’m very familiar with my animals and their stressors, both outside and inside. I only hope that this isn’t the way other clients and patients are being treated.

The staff are so friendly and helpful. I had been delayed getting to my appointment and when I called they were so accommodating. They said they would try to fit me in between the other appointments and after the paperwork was all done, we were in to see the vet within 10 mins. Highly recommend!!

They did a great job saving our fur baby and follow-up care. Very professional and caring staff.

Received a puppy from a breeder with a health certificate signed by Dr. Susan Thoma, it did not disclose any health problems. We found out from another vet that the puppy had severe 5/6 congenital heart murmur PDA. Pretty hard to miss.
