How to Save Money at Capital Veterinary Specialists, JAX and Animal ER

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my poor chihuahua in January 13 not knowing what was going on in full panic. They were so understanding to my emotional status and inability to process what was going on with my sweet girl! I can’t even describe how Dr.Nichols and his staff treatment of me and answering my repetitive questions was so appreciated. I’ve never in my life experienced a staff with so much compassion and honesty! They didn’t nickle and dime me and were up front and honest about all cost as soon as I walked through the door!! We ended up having to make the hardest decision of any pet owners life. And I couldn’t have ask for better people to have done it with! Thank you everyone in that office for treating my chlo chlo as if she was your own pet!! I’ll be in dept forever to each and everyone of you!!

I just had to say WOW. Out of all of the vets I have been to in YEARS, these people are one of the only ones that have the animals best interest at heart. The compassion, the willingness, just overall everything. They went above and beyond to make sure the cat I brought in was okay. She was attacked by a dog last night and I went to pick her up and didn’t know what to do. You guys are amazing and should be so so proud of yourself and to the manager and the owner of the company, every single one of the workers working last night were lovely.

Our visit was not one of joy. I wasn't able to be there when my baby of 16 years suddenly went downhill that day so I asked my husband to take him in not knowing that he wouldn't come back. I thought that he would come home the next day feeling better but Looking back now I realized that when he started getting sick in August it was the beginning of his end here. No medicine or treatment was going to make him any better. Dr. Kaitlin called me and explained everything to me so I had to let him go right there and then. She was very thorough in her explanation and I appreciate her for that. I was Bogie's person and he was those once in a lifetime special ones that just take over your heart and give you so much joy to be together. I appreciate everything they did for him. thank you

Today I knew going in that I had to put down my 17 year old cat as he has stopped eating and could not stand. When I called, they were very kind and told me to come in. They immediately put us in a room so we could spend time with Brighton and thoroughly explained the process and what would happen. They were extremely kind and caring, and even told us to call if we needed anything when we left.

Capital Vet saved our dog's live just over 4 years ago when he was diagnosed with meningitis. Dr. Walker is extremely knowledgeable and compassionate, patiently explaining the conditions, options and expectations. Unfortunately his support staff has been a nightmare. I called for a prescription refill for medication that our pet's life literally depends on. We were told he had to be seen before a refill would be issued. I made an appointment for the upcoming Monday and explained we did not have enough medication to last until then. I also explained we thought our recheck was in a year and not six months like they claimed. They got permission to issue a 3 day supply, the exact amount to get us to appointment day. I explained our pharmacy would not break the pack of 30. I called the pharmacist the next day and he told me the vet's office had attempted to prescribe 3 but he was unable to break the pack. I got no call from the vet to resolve. I called the vet back and was refused medication. Each call involves long waits while the staff confers with others in the office. I have another two days' supply and know that the pharmacy often has a delay to get the medication (which I also explained to the vet support staff). The situation is extremely stressful, entirely unnecessary and presents a grave risk to our family Labrador.
