How to Save Money at Alta Bluff Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If you want affordable pet care and honest communication. This is not the place for you! Unfortunately, I had a very poor experience at Alta Bluff Animal Hospital. I was charged almost $400 dollars for a check up, heart worm prevention and 4 vaccinations for my 15 pound Aussiedoodle. I was told at that appointment that the vet would like to split up the vaccinations. I was told that it would be easier on my puppy to do 2 vaccines now and 2 later and that I would not be charged for splitting it up and coming in later. However, at my later visit for the rest of my vaccinations I was charged an additional $125 dollars. They did not listen when I explained what the vet had told me. They insisted on further payment. I don't recommend this facility.

This vet was very caring when we had to put my dog little guy down on 9/26 gave us time with him and to say good bye never rushed us. They handled everything with the cremation and getting him back was two weeks which is decent time. His box and card from the pet funeral home was very nice.

I love this place and the amazing care the give our 2 Doxies! They have been so gentle and kind to them, one of our pups has lots of issues and they are very accommodating in making sure we can get him in when needed! They are always so excited to see the pups and the staff is beyond kind! I highly recommend!

I highly recommend finding a different location for your pets. When first going to this establishment I enjoyed the front staff and the kindness of the vet techs. The veterinarian was also very welcoming and kind to my dog. After coming to a couple veterinarian appointments, I thought I could trust my dog with the groomer. When picking my dog up from the groomer, he was looking down, wouldn't open his eye, wouldn't leave his bed when coming home and was uninterested in his food which was an unusual behavior. Once my dog did open his eye, his eye was blood shot. I was able to call them as soon as they opened and they were willing to see my dog right away. The only thing the groomer was able to say was that my dog did not have a good time. The veterinarian was very casual about the situation and told me my dog would be better in a two week time period. The groomer proceeded to pick up my dog and called his blood shot eye "a fun party trick in the mean time." They also charged me for the medication for his eye. The medication he needed from coming back from their groomer. The medication seemed to work for a couple days but my dog started to not eat his food and closed his eye again. When trying to call Alta Bluff, they wouldn't get him in for a week. I had to try a different animal hospital location which had informed me that he was on the wrong medication and that his eyeball was gauged. By the time he was on the correct medication, his eyeball had taken a turn for the worse and he needed to go into emergency enucleation eye removal surgery. He had to have surgery at Blue Pearl Animal hospital who's staff was so kind and helpful. Alta Bluff was very kind when first going to their appointments. My biggest concern would be that they had a human moment and hurt my dog while in their care and not being to take accountability.

We have been using Alta Bluff Animal Hospital since Holly Berry was just a puppy. She is familiar with the staff (more so than me since it was during the pandemic). Recently, we had an ER visit with a follow up with Dr. Reinhardt. Being a nervous furmom, they were kind enough to work me into their schedule on a very busy Monday. I cannot say enough kind things from the reception staff (Taylor), and vet assistants (Joan). (I'm sorry I can't remember everyone's name). All of you were extremely helpful and considerate of my feelings. As well as the care you provide Holly. It is so hard to know who to trust when it comes to the care of your pets. In my opinion, Alta Bluff did go above and beyond the call of duty. They definitely have my vote of confidence.
