How to Save Money at Florida Veterinary Referral Center – Emergency and Specialty Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have to say I thoroughly read the reviews before going to this vet and some of them nearly made me go elsewhere and may even have colored my initial reaction while there, but our experience at this s animal hospital could not have been more positive. Dr. Simiento, while initially very straightforward and certainly pulling no punches about the turn our dog’s medical situation could take, was a dream of a caretaker for our Willa. Her worry for our dog may have made us experience more stress, but it is that very worry for our Willa that kept her on top of any possible issue Willa might experience and her skill in meeting that challenge head on was unmatched. Her knowledge and explanations of what were going on were very thorough, as well, even drawing us a pic of what was occurring inside our dog during this emergency. We could not be more thankful for this Doctor, the staff of FLVRC and our experience at this hospital. The care they provided was top notch. The vet techs there kept us fully informed throughout the evening, sending videos to us of our girl and keeping us up to date constantly while also finding the answers to our many questions. Thank you to all of you for saving our Willa this week. We are more grateful than you know. The only reason I didn’t do 5 stars was that their ventilator was not in working condition and should our Willa had needed it, she would have died because they did not have the staff overnight to handle manually bagging her until morning. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars. Just call first to see if the vent was repaired if you believe your dog may need a ventilator but otherwise, five star performance by all.

I wish I could Leave 10 STARS! Amber Depinet & Dr Caro were AMAZING & helped my tiny 3week old kitten with a dislocated hip and torn knee ligament, kitty was seen, assessed, imaging, under anesthesia, casted, coned, woken up-in and out in under 2 hours, handle with care, compassion and kindness! I’ve been to EVERY vet within 50 miles of my house and this is the place to go! Amber is especially sensitive, informative, kind and understanding! We are so grateful to have them nearby! Thank you SO much!

The people at FVRC swiftly intervened in a life-or-death situation and saved my fur kid’s life. They pointed us in the right directions to further resolve serious health issues. I can’t thank you all enough; the receptionists, techs, and Dr’s Lang & Parra. When I was upset, your front desk staff was so kind and comforting; they made me feel like I wasn’t grappling with all this alone. Finny and I thank you!!

FVRC saved my dog's life back in January. When she became ill again yesterday, I didn't hesitate to bring her in knowing she would receive quality care around the clock if needed. It is reassuring to know you are there 24/7. Thank you all. Staff is very kind and caring.

This last “go around”, was Colts Second Surgery at Florida Veterinary Referral Center! Little over 2 Years ago, he Ate a Corn Cob, that Dr A, successfully removed from his Abdomen, and Small Intestine! Being Colt, he needed an extended stay, which gave us a little Scare! He had some Fluid in his Abdomen, they took care of it! About 90 or so Days ago, through a Routine Ultrasound, we discovered Colt had a Tumor on his Liver! Now, he’s 12, but still full of Life, so we went after it! After Scheduling the Surgery, with Dr. Leo Baez( he’s direct, and could use a bit of Bedside Manor, however A Brilliant Surgeon) he went in, removed the Tumor that was bigger than Expected, which Complicated the Closing! When it was looking good, I got a call! Colts PVC count was going down! We decided to go back in! Right decision, he had a Bleed! Dr Baez did some “patching up”, we looked Optimistic! Over the next week, it was “Up and Down”, Nerve Racking, with so much Invested! Dr Baez was out out of The Country, but checking in, and giving Advice! Moving Forward, Dr Glander over saw Colt the rest of The Week! Thank God for her, She’s a God Send, and full of Knowledge, and just an Awesome, caring Dr! Colt continued to Concern us all Week, just like last Time! Fortunately, This last Tuesday he was Ready to Come Home! Nervously, I picked him up! He then Continued to spend work hours at our General Vet, and so far, so good! I cant say enough about this Facility, and it’s Staff! From Dr Baez, Dr. Glander, Dr “A”, Dr Mosley, Dr Booth(who Assisted on Colts 2nd Surgery til 2 AM, to Jody Surgery Tech, 2nd Jody, Casey (answering the Phones, and an Awesome Heart), and I’m missing a few Names, but ALLThe rest of the Staff! My God, what an Awesome Family! Colts Famous there! One might say, sure You gave them Thousands, and it’s True! But, when You Hear Your Surgeon is checking in from out of The Country , and other Docs are Texting on Days off checking in, “how’s Colt Doing”? That means more than anything! ! It means this is the Place You can trust to bring Your “Family Member” to! Not sure, could be the longest “Review “ Ever! However, Dr Parra and his Crew Rock! I leave this LONG Review to give Hope to anyone that may not be Rich, but has the means to continue to Save YOUR Family Member, as long as there is light at the End of The Tunnel, Trust these Docs! It might just get You some more Time! Gods Speed Coltman To a FULL Recovery! Thanks again to All Staff!!!
