How to Save Money at Main Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Chewy went to Main Street all his life. Dr. Master is great as is all the staff there. When it was time for Chewy to cross the bridge they were kind and compassionate, as they always have been. They even sent a sympathy bouquet to the family. They are excellent!

Dr Masters is amazing. Our dog Clyde had some pretty serious health issues and I feel like Dr Masters kept him happy and as healthy as possible. Without Dr Masters I feel like he would have died 3 years ago. You’re the best vet I’ve ever been to. Thanks again for everything. My wife and I will be using you for a very long time.

I can’t say enough positive things about Dr. Masters and all the staff. They care so much, and are so compassionate. Dr. Masters has done an amazing job managing my dogs millions of conditions. He helps keep me calm and level headed, and is ever optimistic (but realistic) with any new treatment. He is patient with my insane number of calls every month, since a new symptom always pops up. I’m so lucky to have found this clinic, I know my old boy is in the best hands.

Up until recently I probably would sing the praises of the team at Main Street Animal Hospital. I've taken all 3 of my pets here, one of which was a 10 year old epileptic olde English bulldog, Jax. Jax was epileptic since he was 3 years old and although Main Street had only been his vet for only half of his life, I'm sure you could imagine how costly the vet visits & medication for all of his ailments were over the years. Sadly, 2 weeks ago today Jax had a seizure that he just would not come out of... so I brought him to Main Street animal hospital with the hopes that they could save him. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the Jax I knew and loved was gone so I had to make the decision to send him to dog heaven. Anybody that has been through this experience knows how heart wrenching it is. It took every piece of strength I had to call the vet to arrange to pick up Jax's ashes. First let say, under no circumstances did I expect this bill to bill inexpensive...however, when Jennifer told me that my bill was $1075 I almost fell off the chair!!!! Apparently the medicine the doctor gave Jax trying to save him was expensive... seriously?!? We all know the cost we pay as a client is very different than the cost of vet actually pays for a medicine... I am a client that has not only brought all three animals to Main Street animal Hospital, I've referred friends, clients, Neighbors You name it to them over the years....so during one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life, you would think the vet that I've been loyal to, would maybe give some sort of discount, especially considering the amount of money that I've spent there over the years?!? NOPE!! Needless to say, I was disgusted. Not just for me, for all of their clients like me. Like most pet owners, have paid top dollar for so many treatments, medicine, different medicine because the first option was wrong, etc. for so for your service for years. I never complained about the cost of a bill, in all that time. Why not offer some sort of compassionate discount on the hardest day of a pet owners life....maybe as a show of gratitude or kindness. Instead of doing the complete opposite!! Unfortunately, that was the last time I will ever bring a pet to Main St Animal Hospital. R.I.P. JAXSON🐾💔

The doctor was wonderful and nice. The testing was fast and accurate. I was shown the x rays and we discussed a treatment plan. Thank you for helping little Lt.Dan.
