How to Save Money at Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Altamonte Springs

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We love Petfolk! From our first visit we were impressed by the clean offices and caring staff. My cat ended up needing dental surgery and I appreciated how they walked me through it and showed me the dental suite. Dr. Speicher was kind and a wealth of knowledge with his experience. The staff kept me updated about the surgery, which helped calm this pet mom's nerves. Milo seems to be recovering well. We even went ahead and got their membership plan as it's a great deal that makes sense.

The best vet experience I’ve ever had. So knowledgeable, super affordable. Not to mention the aesthetic in there is so nice, it’s modern, clean and not your generic bland looking vets office. My favorite part is that the unlimited membership is such a shockingly low and affordable price and program considering sometimes I get so busy with other errands and task, that being able to make a virtual visit or even talk to the vets through the app without having to leave our home is a game-changer and life saver! I’m so happy I decided to try them out because I’ve dealt with a fair share of local vets in Seminole count and this one by far is my favorite. The vet tech was so sweet and patient with my crazy boy, and the Doctor was very welcoming and made me feel very comfortable talking about all my concerns for my babies skin. I’m so grateful for stumbling accross this gem of an office, when searching for new vets on Google ❤️

In the first photo you can see how my cat arrived at the veterinary appointment and in the second photo you can see in his posture that he already feels better thanks to the care they gave him at Petlock. Thank you for explaining all the procedures to me and answering my questions, without forgetting the kindness of all the staff and the delicacy with which they treated my kitten.

Today, Petfolk had the distinction of orchestrating the most horrific and traumatizing experience of my life as we had to make the excruciating decision to put our beloved 14 year old golden chow mix to sleep. We arrived at the appointment time and were greeted and then take to a room. Then, we were immediately taken back to the lobby from where we came to get a weight on the dog (the dog who can’t walk because he is going into organ failure). Once we got back to the room, the ‘tech’ started preparing a catheter port in his left front leg so that they could administer the drugs. This involved shaving part of the leg. Also I am holding him on the ground so that he doesn’t get aggressive. The tech seemed to have gotten the line started but then another tech came in to assess the situation to discover that there was a kink in the line. So then they unwrapped his tapped leg so that they could try a little higher on leg. During this time, the two vet “techs” in the room had a disagreement in front of us as to whether the other leg should be tried or higher on the same leg. So they went with higher on the same leg. So more shaving and then the port inserted. The port being inserted was followed by the most ridiculous tape job for an animal being put to sleep. Then they went to test the line. It wasn’t pushing. So they had to untape his poor fur and rescrew in part of the catheter. Once they did that they called the doctor in to administer the drugs. She squeezed a white milky substance into the catheter. Then my husband points out that the substance is allover the floor, not in my dog. They weren’t even in a vain. From there I suggest that we switch legs. So I reposition myself to support the dog from the other side as he is distressed and thrashing about. At this time I ask if there is a sedative that we can give the dog as he is obvious uncomfortable and in pain in his final minutes and this process was taking way longer that expected. Dr. McKenny stated that she didn’t know what meds they had at the facility. Ok…. So then, I inquired from the techs who were in the room to see what they had to ease my dogs pain. Not sure why I to communicate between people in the same room who room at the same place. We got NOTHING because this isn’t a place that supplies meds apparently. So now we are on the right leg. I am holding the dog on the floor. The tech next to me asks for permission to have physical contact with me which was an odd thing to say as we have already been sitting on the ground with my dog. The first tech tried the right leg UNSUCCESSFULLY. At this point I am loosing it. It is beyond upsetting to see your dog suffer more than he has to. He is thrashing about and apparently in pain. So then all of a sudden the Vet, Dr. McKenny decides to show up! She literally says to the two bumbling techs, “I know you guys like this catheter method, but can I please just put this dog to sleep. The dog is stressed and she is stressed. Let’s just put the dog down.” Excellent idea Dr. M. Why the hell didn’t they do that in the first place and why is a VET asking for permission from a tech? Who is in charge? This was a cluster. So then the vet, Dr. McKenny goes to administer the shot which is now in his back leg, and right before she pushes it in the tech to my left stops the vet, “Dr. McKenny, are you really sure that you want to use that gauge The level of miscommunication, disorganization, and complete lack of authority and leadership was utterly shocking. My husband and I are seriously and severely emotionally traumatized but what occurred today. We’ll be consulting legal counsel to determine damages.

Amazing service, I cannot believe the effort and support to help my very old (22yo) puppy. He has made a drastic improvement. Now back to walking, eating and moving around. Thank you so much!
