How to Save Money at House Call Pet Doctor

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I used Dr. CAROLINE for about five years or more. The reason I stopped was I had to cancel an appointment at the last minute. (I'm 76 with serious health problems. ) At the next appointment, she laughingly added $90 to the bill for the missed appointment. Not funny and too much for old people just making it.

I don't know how she does it but I'm thankful for it. We had to say goodbye to my buddy due to Osteosarcoma. Met her out front and took care of payment ($100 less than her closest competitor) Cecil got to hang out on the back patio and enjoy the sunrise and watching his birds on the feeders. She came out back and gave him a sedative before shaving a spot for a vein and getting him ready so he could relax. I laid down with my buddy one last time and she quietly administered the dose and left me to lay there with him. She explained everything and made sure we were aware of what could happen physically as he goes, respectful and quiet as he went. She said goodbye to us both and left us alone. He was a very large dog with a painful tumor on his right shoulder so not having to put him through the pain and stress of a vets office was definitely worth the extra $60 it cost to do it at home. He got to slip away at home on his bed watching his birds on a beautiful morning. Thanks Dr W for making a tough situation as easy, stress free and beautiful as possible. Has to be a quack vet, immediately recommended owners put their cat down after having it only 3 DAYS. Without bothering to look into its history (has never broken the skin before this) or suggesting other paths first to my knowledge like shelters, rehoming, behavioral assistance, etc. The owners were going to put it down if they didn’t find someone to take the cat immediately. Thankfully a shelter took the cat in. The cat bit the owners, but that happens for a variety of reasons especially when in a new environment and rarely is it a cause to put a cat down. What vet would even recommend putting a vaccinated cat down for biting someone after having it barely 72 hours?

We made the sad and difficult decision to put our 21 year old cat to sleep. We didn't want her last moments to be in a scary vet's office, so we called House Call Pet Doctor thinking that it would be less traumatic to say goodbye at home. In contrast to most vets, House Call Pet Doctor was not warm or empathetic. She was pretty tactless and almost awkward. Fine - we were just planning to deal with her this once, and in my mind, it was worth it for our cat to slip away peacefully in her bed (although probably not what I would want to deal with for annual wellness checks). After it was done, she strangely walked out of the house without saying anything. I had to yell after her asking when we would get her ashes back. She replied, "About a week." Almost a week later, I get home from work to see a Boscov's bag tied to the door. I thought it was a menu or campaign ads, so I was shocked to see that it was our cat's remains. The vet didn't call/text/email to tell us she was dropping her off. Worse yet, it was raining that day. Our pets are our family, so this was really upsetting that House Call Pet Doctor had no respect for our cat's ashes or our grief. I highly encourage anyone looking for a mobile vet to look elsewhere.

The H2O's Fam is here!

I have read prior reviews and I wondered with whom they were speaking about. The Pet Doctor was awful. I contacted her because my little lady would not get into the carrier for multiple vet visits. I decided to call the Pet Doctor in hopes that a house call would be more comfortable for my little lady. Boy..was I wrong!! The Pet Doctor was not friendly and warm as you may expect a veterinarian to be. She came across as rude, uncaring, non-empathetic and rushed. She tried to grab and corral my little lady. My Shebah got angry and began to growl, hiss and swipe like never before. My Shebah was so afraid. She put a towel over my Shebah and she further was trying to use a fishing net to catch my little lady. It was so unsettling to see my furbaby in so much distress. I trusted her because she was "the professional". She was not personable. She indicated that my Shebah was feral because I got her from the shelter and this is the way they act. She was unprofessional, callous, and unable to provide my cat any type of peace or solace during her visit. Our visit was filled with my cat screaming, hollering, hissing, snarling and running away. My cat has never done any of these things. The Pet Doctor took no time to try to get to know or become aquinted my little lady. No.. Pet Doctor.I beg to differ..this is how a scared cat with anxiety acts when a strange unfriendly person walks into her home trying to handle her with (0) attempt to get to know her. Lastly, I am in a wheelchair and she insinuated that most of the time an owner could help her corral the cat. That's not my job.. you are getting paid to help my Shebah! She was adamant about getting paid for nothing.. her terrorizing visit fee of $115. I regret putting my dear Shebah through this. Avoid the pain and heartache of seeing your furbaby scrambling for her life..terrorized to the point of growling, hissing, snarling and swiping. Shebah is generally a sweet and friendly cat. In sumation, I DO NOT recommend the Pet Doctor for the sake of your furbaby's emotional well being.
