How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Cannot recommend them enough. When my two cats were exposed to lilies, I was expecting the resulting emergency medical experience to be full of fluorescent lights, hours of misery waiting in a dirty, loud room, and zero communication (kind of like a human ER). This couldn’t have been further from my experience. The wait time was a few hours (as it is in most emergency clinics), but the staff members were kind, swift, and professional, and the facility was extremely clean and quiet. No one acted bothered by my questions and requests for updates, and a nurse met with me almost immediately to check vitals while I waited for the intake. The doctors and techs here have a true passion for animals, and they always treated my kitties like their own, right down to kisses, cuddles and different food options! When other owners left, I saw the staff continue to love on the animals—soothing them, keeping them company, gushing over their cuteness. The clinic also has a 24/7 open door policy, so I could stay with my cats through everything—bloodwork, vitals checks, etc.—and could even sleep there if I wanted. The entire time, they answered questions, reassured me, and kept a smile. I’m sure they were all swamped and stressed, but they didn’t let it show for a second: It was almost shocking how joyful, smart and attentive they were. The staff turned a terrifying experience into something that honestly reminded me that there are still good people in the world. I even enjoyed getting to know the doctors, nurses and other pet owners in the facility. I wish doctors for humans had this level of enthusiasm and empathy for their patients. I hope I never have another pet emergency, but I’m so happy to know that this clinic exists if I need it. So glad to have two healthy, happy kitties at home with me thanks to them. 🩷

I recently had a great experience at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG). Every member of the staff was gracious, kind, and empathetic. They made us feel welcomed and supported during a difficult time. Dr. Hunter, provided exceptional care for our pet, Alex, and we were grateful to be able to stay with them the whole time. Dr. Hunter's expertise and compassion were evident throughout their interactions with us. They took the time to explain Alex's condition and treatment options in a way that was easy to understand. We felt reassured and confident in the care being provided. Overall, our experience at VEG was incredibly positive. The staff's kindness and empathy made a challenging situation more manageable, and Dr. Hunter's exceptional care exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend VEG to anyone in need of emergency veterinary services.

Exceptional with a capital E! This is my second emergency visit to VEG. Every single person is swift, supportive and compassionate! I wish Dr. Robert’s and her team had a private practice! They are pricey but worth every penny!

I want to give VEG 10 stars if I could. We came here so late like 2:00 am since our girl threw out five times a day, and also had allergies around her face. We were really worried!!! But when we came here, Annie was treated really fast and all the staff are so nice and helpful. Doctor is really thoughtful, patient and caring even she just finished a surgery. The whole treatment is fast and very professional. Thank you so much!!!

I will never be able to sing enough praises for the entire staff at VEG Georgetown. I’m a first time solo pet mom (I grew up with pets but have never had my own as an adult). I had multiple middle of the night calls about a sick kitten - from the onset, they were extremely comforting, calm, and kind. My kittens were feral and are still being socialized - they also had a horrible experience at a prior vet - and let me tell you … this place is INCREDIBLE. They were so gentle with my girls & with myself. They explained everything throughly, talked about options, and were so so compassionate - which feels rare these days. They went above & beyond to accommodate both of my girls and their anxiety. They also soothed my anxiety, answered all my questions, and validated my feelings and experiences (which had been previously invalidated at other vets). I’m so incredibly grateful for the entire staff - every single soul in that building is a god send. I even ran into one of the techs, who didn’t work with me or my girls, 2 blocks from the vet while she was walking a dog and I was leaving - she thanked me for coming in and wished my girls well. The customer service is beyond exceptional. I felt seen, heard, and genuinely cared for. I spent hours this morning debating on taking my girls to the ER vs the normal vet - I don’t regret my decision for a minute. Super clean facility, too. If your pet has any type of emergency - don’t even think twice. Go to VEG Georgetown. The reviews couldn’t be more true. To the entire staff - Frey, Lu, and I cannot thank you enough!!!
