How to Save Money at Connecticut Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Over the span of around 25 years, we have relied on CT Veterinary center for the care of our cats. We have always had a great experience there even in unfortunate times when we have had to utilize the 24 hour emergency services. Doctors and staff have always been knowledgeable, caring and compassionate. It is conveniently located and I find the pricing to be competitive and fair.

I unfortunately had an emergency with my pet cat sparky last night. I called these guys and they said ring the doorbell we will take you in. It was almost midnight and my cat lost all mobility in his back end. They were able to tell us that he had underlying heart issues that had caused a blood clot to stop his back legs from working after moving down after time. They were amazing while consoling us and helping us pass him over the rainbow bridge as peacefully as possible. We were able to spend as much time as we could with him and we are able to have beautiful memorials made for him. The staff was amazing in the horrible times we had and I’m so glad we were able to afford it because that cat deserved the world!

I brought my very sick cat here for emergency care. I felt as though the vet Dr. Cox was very thorough and kept me informed while he quickly found a diagnosis. He kept me informed about all treatment options. My cat ended up having a terminal condition and the vet was very compassionate and helped me understand how to know when it was time to say goodbye. I have already recommended this vet to friends who have pets and I would absolutely come back.

Never been there before, I brought my cat for emergency treatment. I've never been here, I'm not a regular. It's an emergency. I went in through one of 2 entrances and asked where the emergency entrance for treatment was only to be asked to queue in line. Reception never bothered turning around. Waited in line and when it was my turn I was told emergency services were on "hold". I've never been in an emergency situation and I asked what that meant and it's basically "no emergency services". If I had called ahead i'd have been told otherwise. Again, I've never had an emergency situation ever. I don't know what's protocol and such. But to be flatly and coldly told that me in an emergency situation I needed to call ahead to check? I'm more than willing to wait, but to say 24 hour emergency services is a bit of a stretch when I have to call in ahead for 315 on a Saturday afternoon. I'm sure there are some good treatment to be had here, but I figure I'd warn newcomers to just beware if you're in an emergency situation.

I love the care provided by the different doctors here. Consistently they are amazing and everyone really cares about your babies and you. I think I have seen three doctors in total here and every single one, incredible!! They understand that my cat is important to me and gets the same attention my dog does. Even when my dog was going through training and had anxiety, they were so patient with him! 10/10 service!
