How to Save Money at River Valley Animal Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I needed to schedule surgery for my puppy and when I called River Valley, I spoke to Katie. She was very helpful and pleasant. I did not feel rushed as she took my information. Katie listened to my concerns. Several people have complained about being poorly treated on the phone, but what I experienced was quite the opposite. Katie is professional, yet kind and understanding. She is a asset to River Valley Animal Center.

These people ruined our dog - twice! And this last time they grossly overcharged us to the point where they took $$ off the bill once they were questioned about it. But as for ruining the dog, our dog is a small dog and gets full grooming once or twice yearly. Last year, they shaved him almost completely - in winter! This was not what we asked them to do. Two days ago, he went in for grooming again and my wife wrote a note that said specifically to shave only his rear and around his eyes and NOT to shave anything else. THEY SHAVED HIS ENTIRE BODY AGAIN! He essentially has no hair! It is winter and he is now freezing and will be (again) all winter. He will need to wear a coat inside and outside all winter until hair returns or weather warms up. This not only impacts the dog but also all who love and care for him as he is suffering. They should fire this groomer but no matter what we will NEVER return. Recommend you run in the opposite direction rather than give them any business. Terrible, terrible care of animals that are loved!

We recently adopted a cat through Hermione's Home, which is run from River Valley Animal Center. He's a great cat, although a bit of a monster when it comes to food. He can't be stopped. But we love him. He's a mischievous little scamp.

Completely disappointed by the experience I had today at this vet. We've been coming here for a year and a half and I have always been less than pleased with the service I have received but today’s experience confirmed this place only cares about money. My dog had an abscess in her anal glands a few months ago and the vet told me she should be coming in every 3 months to get her glands expressed. The tech told me this would be about $30 a visit. I called last week to book this appt and asked the receptionist to confirm how much it would be. She said the exam is $90 to which I said we do NOT need an exam and explained what the vet had told me. She told me to “talk to the vet when you get here”. I go in and we wait 30 minutes after our appt until the Dr. Sachdev and his tech walk in. I see that he has a stethoscope ready and again reiterate she DOES NOT NEED AN EXAM. I said we are only here to get her glands expressed. He doesn’t say much other than telling me peanut butter is bad for my dog. After expressing her glands, he feels her stomach and asks how she is doing. I say again she’s fine and we were just here to get her glands expressed. The tech basically runs out of the room and the doctor goes you know you could have booked this with the tech since I didn’t need to be here. To which I about lose it and say I TRIED. (Why is he telling me this and not his front desk staff??) He then tells me that he won’t charge me for a full visit and I immediately am concerned by what he means by that. I go out and the reception says it’ll be $120!!! I say nope the vet just told me he is not charging me for a full visit. She checks and comes back to say that he is going to charge me $60 for a brief recheck and it’s $33 for the expression so I had to pay $92 to get her glands expressed. She was not the one who booked so she did apologize but I said this is why I said when I booked it, I didn’t need an exam! My groomer literally does the expressions for $15 so I could have gone there. They really need to educate their staff on how to book appointments correctly because I was forced to pay for this receptionist’s error. Needless to say, I will be calling around to other vets today because we are absolutely not returning to this money hungry place.

Well 10 yrs of going there seem ok. Last yr place went to hell. Had one dog miss diagnosed with a issue then 8 months later had to put him down,he did apologized for wrong doing but to late dog put down. Now had other dog teeth cleaned, dog had no issues and charge 1200 dollars and 2 days later dog is very sick. Call them later and left message and no call back. Had to take dog to a emergency facility and was put on medication. I am DONE WITH THEM.
