How to Save Money at Monroe Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My puppy, Elvis, recently had his first appointment at Monroe Animal Hospital. Our experience was significantly positive compared to his previous "care" at Countryside Vet in Shelton, CT, where we had ongoing negative experiences. On the day of Elvis' appointment with Monroe Animal Hospital, I felt nervous, uncertain, and wary due to our previous encounters at Countryside. To my relief, I was RELIEVED to discover that Monroe Animal Hospital offered such a warm and positive experience for Elvis and me. Dr. Burg and Sara provided him with outstanding care, consisting of a proper, thorough, and gentle examination of Elvis without using negative reinforcement. Elvis, who had previously shown signs of distress during check-ups at Countryside, felt safe with both of them. I noticed a significant change in his demeanor, a clear sign of the positive impact of Monroe Animal Hospital's care. I am incredibly grateful to Monroe Animal Hospital for making us both feel secure and taking such phenomenal care of Elvis. If you're looking for a veterinarian, you won't want to take your pet anywhere else—trust me!

I’ve never met someone so perfect for a profession as Dr Burg is for his. We’ve been patients of his since 1993. He has treated 6 cats of ours over the years. He and his team go out of their way to offer help in difficult circumstances. They are compassionate and creative and help you to make reasonable decisions in emotional times. So caring and calm. I fear the day that he retires.

Dr. Burg (and at points Drs. Waldo and Sackler) cared for my dog from 8 weeks and then for years at a time for his 14 years (I had moved in and out of the area a few times, but always came back to this practice). Dr. Burg performed surgery on him twice when he was younger. He was last seen in the office a few months ago so his care there was up to date. Several weeks ago, I had a true emergency at 8am on a weekday: my elderly dog had collapsed and I could not get him up. I called the office in tears (knowing I’d likely need to put my best friend to sleep) and was flatly told by the receptionist that Dr. Burg had no appointments that day, but that she’d leave him a message and call me back. I called back to follow up an hour later and same cold, flat response. I asked if Dr. Burg was in the office that day—he was—and she apparently was unwilling to ask him directly (“Like I said, I left the doctor a note”). There were no other relief staff available at the practice that day. My dog died that day, at an emergency facility that did not know us. I never received a call back from Monroe Animal Hospital. There are two clear issues here: no emergency appointments in the schedule (I called immediately when the office opened that day) and the cold response from staff. It’s worth noting that I was not an overly demanding, verbally abusive client on the phone—I was kind and communicated the issues my dog was having very clearly. I’m more than disappointed. I am in healthcare myself and am well aware of the demands that the pandemic has brought to the industry and staff being stretched. But this practice that saw my puppy for the first time 14 years ago gave me the cold shoulder when he and I needed the care the most. I’m getting a new puppy soon and I can’t bring him back here.

We have been with Monroe Animal Hospital since they first opened many years ago. I cannot express the gratitude we have for Dr. Burg, Dr. Waldo and their staff. Dr. Burg is brilliant and has healed all of our pets over the years. He is always very calm and loving and we appreciate he uses conservative measures first. I would never go anywhere else! Dr. Burg and his team are the BEST of the best!

I have been taking my dogs to Monroe Animal Hospital for nearly 15 years. The staff is always friendly and I always leave feeling my pets got top notch care. One of my dogs even gets excited when I ask "You wanna go see Dr. Waldo?" Love it!
