How to Save Money at VCA Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff, doctors, and technicians here are all very nice, thorough and caring. My 16 year old senior tabby boy, Wiggle, faced a long journey over the past year involving the discovery of a mitral valve issue, a stroke, and eventually persistant hypertensive crisis. The staff did everything they could to make him comfortable and try to get the illness under control (including getting medication from a different facility), and sent us pictures during his overnight hospital stay. Ultimately, I had to say goodbye to my sweet boy as he continued to decline in health, but I just wanted to say thanks for everything.

So I usually don't post negative reviews, if anything I bring it up to management and see if things can be corrected. Unfortunately I was charged 1200 dollars and some change for a short visit with my dog. I never did get a diagnosis. But I'm not here to complain about that today. I'm here to say I paid my bill in full before I left as stated on the door and they made me very aware. So I paid my bill before I even left with the dog. They said it would be 2 hours so I went and ran an errand. When I came back they went over the highest estimate by $130. At this point I just wanted my dog back and healthy so it wasn't even a question. I gave the lady up front $140 cash they did not even have change for cash. I believe the total was $130 but again I didn't mind. Well collection has called me and asked me about this $130 bill. I had to dig out the records and send it back to them only for them to call me again in 6 months and do it all over again. The lady did not give me a receipt for my cash because she was not able to get machine to work. So now my credit has taken a big hit, although my bank has laughed at this notion that I owe $130 when I pay $20,000 a month in business rent and utilities. I paid in full for my services and now I am being harassed. This is over a year ago. I do plan on taking this to the next step if I am called again about a bill that I have paid. Not to mention my dog was very sick even after the visit with no diagnosis. I took him to my local veterinarian and they prescribed him with some antibiotics and he was well within a week. That was only $300 visit. If you pay with cash make sure you get a receipt! Really dislike leaving a bad review because I have asked him to fix it and it has been a year. I would not recommend you take your dogs into VCA unless your dog is entire need of emergency care and there is no other option.

I’ve been here twice now because my cat has been having urinary tract issues, and I am so happy with how we’ve been treated. Everyone on staff is incredibly friendly, comforting, and professional. they are extremely attentive and act quickly with any emergency. I had to bring my cat in tonight after a long shift at work and hadn’t had a chance to eat anything all day, they even gave me some snacks to hold me over while my cat was being examined. Beyond kind. I hope I don’t have any more pet emergencies in the future but if I do I will come here every time, and highly recommend you do as well.

This place is amazing for an emergency! We took our dog in for bowel obstruction and we couldn't afford the bill but they let us stay there in a private room (we stayed there for like 5 hours) and they helped us figure out a way to get our dog the surgery somewhere else! They even posted on their Facebook for help with donations. Very sweet caring people here! Their prices are a bit high but you can tell they truly care!

Our furbaby was super sick and dying from kidney failure. They made her comfortable and showed a great deal of love and compassion as we said goodbye. They made sure to put her ashes in a pretty little chest with her paw print. Thank you. ❤️
