How to Save Money at Parkside Animal Health Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My kitty was comfortable which made me feel at ease. He didn't like his exam because his bottom was being checked but that's to be expected. When done, he was fine, as if nothing happened. The staff was caring and Dr. Brenda explained things to me clearly.

We lost our pup here but the staff was amazing through this process! They really cared and did everything they could to help us out. Thank you 🙏🏽

We went to Parkside for a couple of years with our two dogs. Apart from the revolving door of staff, there were multiple occasions where we needed to get our dogs in for a same day or next day appointment for a non-life threatening emergency. Multiple times we were told that we had to wait 3-5+ days to get them in, that's not going to fly with my dogs toenail half off or an ear infection... We wound up changing vets and learned about a few other things that should have been done, but weren't. We have a dog on a medication that if increased, can cause systemic hypertension and cause blindness if untreated. We were told to increase her dosage and we thought nothing of it at the time. I can't say how thrilled I was to learn that the vet at Parkside didn't monitor or even mention any of that. Fortunately my dog didn't go blind due to something that would have been completely preventable with proper care. In response to the owners: I will try to clarify a few things to make my review less vague. It seems as though your logs may possibly have some errors in them. I am showing in my prescription records that we started her on a 50 mg per day dose (one 50mg tablet cut in half, 2x per day) in October 2022. That was later doubled with the new prescription (one 50 mg tablet twice a day) of which the new dosage prescription which was issued in May 2023. There was no follow up or instruction to come in for blood work with the increase. If your records do say that her dosage went down and never went back up then may I suggest a re-evaluation your record keeping processes. I realize that all medications have inherent risks, but we rely on the various medical professionals to ensure those risks are minimized or averted. I will fully admit that I know very little about the medical field despite growing up with multiple doctors as close friends and family. I would like to point out that many General Practitioners keep a few appointment slots open each day for non-life threatening emergencies. I don't think going into the emergency vet for an antibiotic prescription to clear the early stages of an ear infection is a good use of anyone's time. I am disappointed in the response given to this review. The ability to admit fault in any capacity is how I judge those I choose to work with and the response fully addresses the second sentence of my initial review. I ask that you please take my inappropriately addressed and vague public rant as the legitimate negative review and experience that it is. All I can ask is that you at least think about what I had to say because I don't want an animal to have avoidable irreversible damage from a lack of follow up. I need a vet I can trust and the owner response to this review galvanized our choice to change vets.

I relocated from out of state and was with my vet for 22 years. I never thought I'd find another great vet and shopped around before finding Parkside. They do a great job listening and applying the correct care. I never feel rushed, the prices are affordable and they are gentle with the animals. Thanks so very much -Magali LaFont

Dr hill was wonderful, and all of the techs and reception were so friendly and helpful. It’s very hard to find a vet that listens to me and doesn’t treat me like I’m dumb, and Dr Hill was absolutely exceptional. We were in and out with two senior dogs in less than an hour, and my dogs felt so comfortable here. Usually I have to be the one to restrain them because they’re a little spicy, but they were so comfortable here that the tech was able to do it without my help. We will definitely be back with my other pets.
