How to Save Money at VCA Yuba Sutter Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my cat here because he had a skin condition that made him scratch a huge hole in his face and they were amazing with him. The Vets name was Dr. Finn which was funny because my cats name is Finn. He did a very thorough exam and explained everything to me step by step. He took his time and was very friendly. He even joked around with my 5 year old son that was bouncing off the walls. Dr. Finns Vet assistant (or nurse?) was awesome too. He was so friendly and attentive. I wish I could remember his name. I absolutely positively recommend this hospital and Dr.Finn personally. The cool part was that my first visit was free and they still treated my cat like a paying patient. Thanks VCA! A clean, pleasant facility well staffed. We were immediately greeted as we arrived, and we're seen quickly. The vet was very knowledgeable, and was very willing to listen to us regarding our pets situation. The exam cost here is significantly less than other practices in the area. Options are laid out as just that options. No one was pushing anything, for the people here make clear their focus is the animals well being. I would highly recommend this practice for all your pets needs, as my family will be frequenting here exclusively.

Friendly staff with a well designed curbside service. We have used them for cat vaccines and boarding with positive experiences each time. Minus 1 star for price. Among vets we've used they are far from the cheapest, but have always been able to schedule us for appointments when others were full.

We’ve been with VCA for almost 4 years now. We never have issues getting an appointment. We recently thought about changing vets, but then discovered Dr. Fin. He has an amazing bedside manner and our pets love him. Our dogs are very anxious when going to the vet. They can tell if the vets are anxious or scared of their barking, which makes them more anxious. All of the other doctors made us muzzle our babies who have never had issues biting. Dr. Fin came in and our pup was relaxed as can be! No muzzle and he even let Dr. Fin take him to the back alone. Dr. Fin really treats your pets with love and fully explains everything to you. He really listens to what you have to say. We have always loved the vet techs at VCA. They’re all so sweet. We specifically request Dr. Fin now. We’ll continue using VCA for our fur babies.

Took my dog in for a wellness check. That should have took 15 min took an 1 and half. Was not happy to sit in the car with my dog for that long. But when he was seen it was quick and the vet was very kind. I would have gave them 5 stars but the waiting curbside for that long was not okay. I do understand emergencies happens but someone could have notify me what was going on, but instead I had to call and was put on hold for 10 more min to find out they had an animal emergency. And again the vet was kind just seemed rushed.
