How to Save Money at Washington Boulevard Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Came to this location as they were able to take my 15 year old chihuahua in as an emergency. They didn't try to drain your wallet with scare tactics. Explained what needed to be done and how much. They are very compassionate and caring. It was unfortunate that my pup didn't make it, she gave it her all was to fight on. They provided me space and time to grieve. They also provided the assistance of what can be done after. I felt it was a very reasonable price for cremation. The services provided were done well.

I took my Chihuahua to the closest emergency vet. This was my first time here. There was a lot of parking available. It was after 7pm. There were six patients before us plus one with an appointment. On the phone I was told that it could be a three to six hour wait. I was prepared with water, snacks, seat cushion and blanket. Plus I brought important documentation that greatly helped st check-in. I was given the walk-in price and asked if it was acceptable. If not, I'd have to go elsewhere. The lobby was comfortable. We waited about an hour, which was unexpectedly and happily short. All patients were well behaved. Including mine. We were called into a room where a very pleasant attendant took the information: did the usual weigh-in, temperature and questions. Shortly, a pleasant veterinarian came in and examined my girl. After a brief discussion she offered two options. I chose the option to give my girl liquid antibiotics 2/every 12 hours. I explained why that option and she concurred. We were happily on our way home in less than two hours. I was very happy with the staff as well as the cleanliness of the lobby, exam room and bathroom. I admit that if we had to wait the estimated six hours, my review might have been written in a less than happy tone. We are very grateful. Based on this one experience which included watching and listening to the other patients and their parents, and their interactions, I highly recommend this 24/7 emergency walk-in vet. I add that, I saw no blood and gore type emergency come in while I was there.

My Yorkie wasn't patient at this hospital, but he had a dental emergency. They took good care of him and at a reasonable price. He's doing so much better now. Thank you!

My daughter brought her kitty here, they were great! Took good care of her and gave my struggling college student a fair price, we waited like 5 hours but was worth it! Highly recommend this place! They do a lot for the people who really love their pets!

One of our little ones passed on a couple of months ago, and they took good care of her. They handled her in a very respectful way. The only issue we had, and I'm not sure who is responsible for it, so I'll reserve my judgment on who's responsible. But we requested and paid for our dog to be cremated and her ashes placed in a box. On the box they gave us, my dogs name was spelled wrong, and the box was falling apart. For the price we paid, I would think that they could spell my dog's name correctly and glue a box properly. But in the end, it doesn't matter. We purchased a very nice urn from an online company for a fraction of the price. Either way, I will still take my little ones to WBAH. They are who I know and who I trust with my little ones. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
