How to Save Money at Pasternak Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My Cocker Spaniel, Goldy, has been under Dr. Pasternak's care for about four years. Last summer, she developed a stubborn ear infection persisting for three months. Despite trying various drops, pills, and ointments with little success, Dr. Pasternak surprised me by prescribing supplements instead of antibiotics. Remarkably, my 12-year-old dog is now as lively as a puppy, her ears have cleared up, cysts around her body have diminished, and her energy is through the roof. Dr. Pasternak's holistic approach, integrating traditional and alternative therapies, impressed me with its comprehensive care. His emphasis on addressing root causes rather than just symptoms reflects a commitment to overall pet well-being. Clear communication and personalized treatment plans further contributed to this positive experience. Thank you Dr.Pasternak and your team!

Dr. Pasternak and his staff are absolutely wonderful. We brought our dog Bowie in as a complicated case and very sick about a month ago. We were told by a specialist at MASH that our sweet boy had max 2 months to live, so we wanted to see someone who practices both holistic and traditional medicine to make him as comfortable as possible for whatever time he has left. Dr. Pasternak’s treatment approach so far is doing wonders- Bowie has energy, a great appetite, and is looking better than he has in several weeks. Time will tell, but in the meantime we are so grateful for this vet and his team! He’s kind, patient, thorough, thoughtful and incredibly well versed/researched in what he does. For those who left reviews about his demeanor- maybe he’s an excellent vet because he likes animals more than people! I know I do. Regardless we disagree with you. He’s lovely!

Took my 19 yr old cat in to see Dr. Pasternak because of diarrhea. It was the calmest vets office I have been in. Staff was lovely and Dr. Pasternak obviously knows his stuff and had me in and out with Lucy in under half an hour. He is an obvious animal lover and the price was really reasonable. I will be staying here with my kitties.

The best. My once upon a stray cat Charles was a medical mystery with nothing but grim outlooks and little information from other vets. Dr. Pasternak made the reality of his health situation clear and has continued to treat him as needed. Despite his trials and tribulations, Charlie is alive and thriving.

Dr. Pasternak is a highly trained & skilled vet, please do not be fooled by his grumpy exterior. There are a handful of other holistic vets in LA, but his practice offers walk-ins including Saturdays, has no waiting list, and was by far the most affordable of all. Our puppy had seen more than 10 vets in her life, and he was the only one to correctly diagnose her genetic condition. He offers herbs, food, antibiotics only when necessary, and testing only when necessary. Every time we went in, he always returned a healthy pet to me. He can be quick, so come very prepared with all your questions & your documents. The staff in front is so kind & compassionate. We've recommended all our family to bring their pets here as well.
