How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE - STAFF IS CARELESS AND RUDE. I brought my cat in for treatment for an eye infection. It was a drop off appointment so they said they would call and let me know when to come get her. After I drove 30 min back home, they called me and said they were not going to treat her. They said she was too nervous and thought it would be easier to send her home with eye cream and sedatives. They sedatives would be used to calm her nerves the night before and day of her follow up appointment in two weeks. I thought this was very strange because she’s been to other vets and they’ve never refused treatment. But I let it go. Two weeks later was the drop off follow up appointment. I gave her the sedatives like they asked. Again, they told me they would give me a call when it’s time to pick her up. I dropped her off at 9:45am. At 2:45, I called to see how much longer it would take for her to be done. I assumed a quick follow up shouldn’t take 5 hours. When I called they told me she had been ready for pick up for over an hour. I told them I never received a call from them and they lied and said they called and left a message. They did not contact me at all. When I got to the clinic, I asked to speak with the veterinarian to get clarity on the lack of communication. The vet, Margaux Siongco, approached me with a very nasty and confrontational attitude. She insisted that she called me and left a message. I asked when she called and she said she didn’t remember when. I was so fed up with being lying to so I showed her my phone to show that I never got a call. She then snapped at me and said, “Well I don’t know what happened to your phone but at least you have your cat back,” and then walked away. I was appalled. Not only did they refuse to treat my animal because she was “nervous” (as if all animals aren’t nervous at the vet) but they also blame their blatant carelessness and lack of communication was blamed on me. I have every right to express concern that my pet was sitting at the vet for over an hour and no one contacted me. ESPECIALLY if they made a point to tell me that that environment makes her nervous. A simple “I’m sorry, we were busy today and we forgot to call you,” would’ve sufficed. I was not wanting to argue with Margaux I was just concerned about my pet and curious about what happened. I also don’t appreciate how they refused to treat my cat unless she was sedated. No other clinic has EVER refused service on her and demand she comes back sedated. If the veterinarian treats people like that I don’t even want to know how she treats animals at these appointments. I don’t think this location truly cares about pets or pet parents. I will never bring my pet back to this location.

Friendly service & clear expectations of cost for services. They’ve taken great care of my Sofia for routine exams and a dental cleaning /surgery. We have one of their care plans and it’s been more than worth it for the included X-rays & dental cleaning.

Been going to this location for a few years. This past year has been one thing after another. Poor care, poor customer service, etc. I no longer feel that they give my animals the love and care that a vet should. I’ve already placed my complaints with the corporate office which only goes back to the hospital itself so no real change happens because they don’t think they do anything wrong. There’s no point in complaining, it won’t change and falls on deaf ears.

Banfield Pet Hospital, I don't always feel they give my dog the best care. They are part of a cooperation. And that's not always a good thing! I'm not happy on how the banfield insurance plan is set up either My dog is 13, and has a tumor, and I feel that they gave up on her because of her age. also if they had removed it, when it was small, we would not be in this situation, or writing this review.
