How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would not recommend taking your pets here, especially if blood needs to be drawn. Our first time brining our cat in it took 7 hours just to get her blood drawn and the results. She was supposed to get a dental cleaning at 7am and around 2pm we were called to say she could not be seen due to blood work results. We bring her back after addressing the health concerns to get her retested and after an hour and a half we are told they have to redraw her blood because something went wrong and they are understaffed. Our cat is extremely scared of everything so the fact that she is constantly either set to the side and forgot about or retested because they are understaffed is not okay. We were told by the staff that her blood tests should only take about 10-15 minutes so I’m not sure why it take hours each time she’s seen. We don’t bring her in to board her for the day we bring her in to get care. Each time we sit in the waiting area other pets will come and go meanwhile our pet is waiting for blood results for hours. I understand if there are issues or something going on behind the scenes, if there was more communication between the care team and the owners it would probably be much better. We are always treated with kindness here by the front desk, however we will not be back because we don’t think our baby is getting the care she deserves.

They took great care of my baby! Not only did they get him in the same day, the didn't change an emergency fee, he had a huge foxtail in his paw and they treated him like he was they're own!! The entire staff was helpful, understanding and compassionate... I would definitely recommend them.... And the treatment plan saved me money. Thank you for helping my baby

DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE!! The service is absolutely horrible. You pay for a plan and they never have appointments only “drop offs” where your dog sits in a kennel for 6+ hours in Pee, poop etc for them to get seen. 55$ a month to only have my dog see a HANDFUL of times bc I refuse to do drop offs and they don’t have availability for weeks for a normal appointment. Do not waste your money or compromise for you dogs care.

Friendly and caring staff. After getting spayed, they called a few times to check on Bella. Her surgery went very well. We can barely see her incision. I highly recommend Banfield! Their Optimum Wellness Plan for puppies is great! It covered her surgery, all her vaccinations and so much more. Thanks for making my puppy so comfortable and happy to see her friends at Banfield. 🥰🐶

My husband has an account with his dog and I am writing a review on our most recent experience attempting to get in here. Our dog has gone here for over 6 years for her wellness appointments with no issues, but when we called them on Saturday about a concern for a abscess lesion on her elbow which we suspected a foxtail, we were told there was either an appointment in 2 weeks or go to the Napa Solano Emergency Clinic. My husband was able to send the veterinarian a picture of the abscess to await consultation on it, but we still have not heard back from the veterinarian/ team in regards to it. This type of customer service is not acceptable. As a client for over 6 overs, I expected that we would be able to get our dog in sooner than 2 weeks or at least a phone call with a veterinarian for a concern like this. We ended up called another Banfield location on Sunday and we were able to get our dog in Monday, the next day. If you can, find another clinic were you can where you can become a regular client and get in quicker for situations like this. TL:DR Find another clinic for wellness appointments as they can’t fit foxtail concerns for sooner appointments and you would have to wait 2+ weeks to be seen “asap”.
