How to Save Money at Paws and Claws Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great place to take your dogs. The staff is kind and helpful and the doctors are great and informative. I had to get health certs for my digs to go to Thailand and they were knowledgeable about the steps and guided me the whole time. They also always answer any of my question and request same day. Overall professional and kind highly recommend.

On 12-21-2021, I had to have my beloved Ella put down. It was by far the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. Ella was 17 years old and was not only my emotional support, but I was hers. Ella was already in her senior years when I adopted her, and had been owner abandoned. I felt she deserved so much more and wanted to give her the best life possible for her remaining years. I know I did that for her, and in return, she made me the happiest pet owner ever. Knowing it was her time to go was the hardest decision I had to make. Ella layed on my chest, and as I was petting her, I said you’re ready to go aren’t you. I then called Paws and Claws Tracy. They were so compassionate through the entire process. I chose to be with Ella to the end, very tough, but they were there to comfort me before and after. I truly don’t know how I would have gotten through it without them. I had Ella cremated. When I got the call Ella’s ashes were ready to be picked up, again the compassion came through, even over the phone. When I did pick up my beloved Ella, she was brought out to me with loving care. Seeing I was still obviously upset, the gal kindly said they are still there for me and to drive safely. True compassion. Thank you Paws and Claws for not only taking care of my beloved Ella, but me, in our time of need. We were truly Blessed to have been in good hands.

Took my cat Sedrick cause his eye had been shut from a bacterial infection. This did a great diagnosis, mentioned it was from dust and debris he gets into & they offered a medicine that helped both his eyes out. Friendly vets and clinic. My boy was very scared but all the animals behaved well too great experience. Also the only place that let me make an appointment the same day, tried and called four places in Stockton! These are photos of my happy boy thank you Paws & Claws!!

I have a very old cat, 16 and has cancer, they have been very compassionate about how to help her keep a good quality of life. Update. MoCuishle has crossed the bridge. I will miss her. I can't say enough about the folks here at P&C.

OMG! This place is amazing, nor the pandemic, nor social distancing kept the doctor and from doing a fantastic job. The staff is over the top professional (with the exception of one grumpy lady that was rude to me) but other than that I had an exceptional experience! My dog Lady was very I'll when I took her in for an emergency visit and after two types of surgery they made her perfectly healthy again. After her last follow up visit her vet phone called twice to check up on her! They are so compassionate and loving! I love that we have found a permanent vet for our fur babies! Thank you Dr. April Ervin & staff!
