How to Save Money at ACCESS South Bay

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My bluenose staffy had a squirrel scratch and bite her nose. I called beforehand to let them know we were coming ahead of time. They were all very kind to us. Being that it's an emergency room, we had a 30-60min wait which was reasonable. They treated Lola so kindly and the cost falls into the typical range of emergency care for pets. They provide excellent care and the staff is kind and of course loves dogs! I have returned since then for other care and highly recommend this location.

I am so grateful to ACCESS South Bay. I had to make the toughest decision to put my 18 1/2 yr old toy poodle down. They were so empathetic and kind to me. I know they see a lot of pet owners come through but they still took great care of me and my fur-baby. They allowed us to spend as much time as we needed with each other as I said a tearful goodbye and before she drifted off to a peaceful sleep. Now both my fur babies are together again.

My beautiful old dog was desperately ill and I was desperately upset. Access not only cared for her but me too! Nicole was amazing and I was allowed to visit my doggy. I feel my dog received better medical attention than most MDs provide their patients!!!

I had the unexpected experience of needing to use the emergency services of ACCESS South Bay. My dog suddenly became extremely ill while visiting LA from out of state. I was brought to ACCESS by a kind individual who works at another veterinarian office and recommended ACCESS. The staff at ACCESS triaged my dog immediately without question and stabilized him. They did a complete and thorough workup and stayed in communication with me the entire time about their findings and plan. Dr. Tam was incredible, smart, kind, and compassionate; as was the entire team there from the front desk to the nurses, techs, and the criticalist. Dr. Tam was honest and professional the entire time. I cannot say enough good things about their care and services for both my dog and myself. Unfortunately, my dog did pass away there that day, but I know they provided him with a dignified and compassionate passing. Their aftercare services with Hearts & Halos has been wonderful as well.

While I will commend the staff at the front desk and the facility highly on the friendliness and ease of care during a scary time. I truly appreciated how helpful and accommodating the front desk staff was when bringing my pet in. As for the scare tactics and RIDICUOUSLY expensive care the actual doctor recommended...that was sorely disappointing. And then the level of customer service I received from the doctor and care team when I refused to pay 3K for observation, and potential care, as needed...as the hands down WORST experience I've had at a vet. The implication that if I didn't agree to the minimum three-thousand dollar recommendation, I was pretty much murdering my dog, and having to sign a release to stated I could take my pet to a "low cost" facility was demoralizing and traumatic! My 12 year son BURST into tears when the doctor told us that if we didn't leave him there...the puppy "would most likely not make it through the night" is the worst experience I've had. News flash...5 days later, my puppy is happy and healthy and didn't die! This place is good if there's a true emergency with your pet, and you have NO WHERE else to go. The price tag, and subsequent judgement and decrease in customer service was definitely a put off for me....NEVER AGAIN!
