How to Save Money at Sharp Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Affordable pet vaccinations and reasonable price doctor visits are only one of the reasons I see Dr Sharp. He's friendly and knowledgeable and has a great manner with pets. I have been coming here for well over a decade.

SAVED MY CAT'S LIFE! My 6 year old cat was lethargic and aggressive out of nowhere -- another vet dismissed my concerns as just behavioral but luckily I was recommended to Sharp's by a friend. They were willing to squeeze me in that day (they did ask about her condition -- so perhaps if she was worse or not as ill they wouldn't have taken her). Dr. Sharp (TRULY SO SKILLED) has the most lighthearted demeanor and within 5 minutes of checking my cat was able to diagnose her with an infected anal gland. He gave me treatment options and unlike other places didn't push or offer unnecessary tests/x-rays/additional medications. He's definitely busy and straight to the point but it honestly gives me more assurance than any other vet that I've gone to. I was crying at the front desk and despite being swamped the lady told me to make sure to come back if my cat wasn't feeling better. You can tell the clinic is really busy and overcapacity but all the staff are incredibly accommodating and so lovely (tell me why everyone was cracking dad jokes -- too wholesome)! Truly feels like going to a family run clinic! I drove all the way from DTLA and I would drive again! SO MUCH LOVE TO EVERYONE AT SHARP HOSPITAL

Dr. Sharp and the office is great. I’ve been bringing my dogs here for well over 9 years. As someone who works as a dental receptionist, I understand how overwhelming it can get and I appreciate everyone working hard and efficiently. With that being said, as I was checking out and waiting to pay, another owner and his cat were talking to me and the owner wanted to pet my dog and allowed my dog to get near his cat (which was in a cage). I did find it quite rude that one of the older receptionist’s told me “can you not.” I hate confrontation, so I did not say anything. Then she proceeded to say that my dog was scaring the cat before their appointment and quickly called in the owner and his cat. If that was the case, the owner would have not given my dog permission to get near his cat. She might have been overwhelmed and annoyed with my dog’s whining as he hates being at the vet but you don’t tell someone “can you not.” She could have kindly asked me to moved elsewhere. Again, I do appreciate everyone’s hard work to try to get everyone seen as soon as possible.

If you are looking to get a pet health certificate for a cat, I do not recommend this place as neither the doctor nor the vet techs know anything about it. We were told different things over the phone vs. in person and even the doctor was giving us contradictory information than the vet techs. They were googling things in order to proceed with certain vaccines and they ended up wasting a lot of our time. We spent 2.5 hours here and did not get everything we wanted done.

I've never left a review before, but I think I need to issue a warning. I brought my dog here for his puppy shots, then later came back to just get the rabies shot. Normally, a doctor or vet will come in, look at his clipboard, and say something like, "I see we're here for x, y, z, correct?" but there was none of that. Dr. Sharp simply began injecting my dog without telling me what he was doing, and when he injected him with a second syringe I asked him what that was, as I was only here for a rabies shot. He told me it was parvo. I was upset, as I wasn't there for parvo, but it was already done. Then when I went to pay, I saw that he had actually given him a whole round of DHPP, which he was already finished with, and bordetella, which he didn't need, on top of the rabies. I had specified explicitly at least twice that I was there for rabies and that was it. I called later after I'd cooled down (I was too angry to talk to them at first) and they did end up giving me my money back, but that does not undo what they did. I also found out that Dr Sharp did the same thing to my sister's dog. So my warning is this: If you choose to bring your pet here, make sure to tell Dr Sharp what you're there for before he does anything, because he seems to just take it upon himself to decide what he wants to do without telling you about it, which is a violation of informed consent, by the way. He might be a good vet in other respects, but I wouldn't know, and I'm never coming back here.
