How to Save Money at VCA San Martin Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I absolutely love this place! Everyone who works there is so kind and so great with Blue! I love how clean it is and that they always follow up to see how Blue is doing! I also love how easy their app is to use and the fact that there is a 24 hour vet to chat with. Definitely recommend!

The moment I walked in with my little dog Fiona, who was in much pain we were received with kindness and concern immediately. Everyone in there is super loving to animals after my horrible experience the night before at arch veterinary services in San Jose, I was grateful to find the VCA San Martin Animal Hospital. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you did for Fiona🐶💜

Do not take your pets here if you love your pet. I took my dog in because he wouldn't walk. The only option they gave me was to put him to sleep. They refused to do anything else or even try to look into the issue. Another time, we took out pet here for a leg surgery and they operated on the wrong leg. We paid $4000 and all they offered a discount to work on the correct leg. I regret ever taking my pets here. We lost 3 pets in 1 year do the negligence of this place. So if you love your pets, do not bring them here.

Summary: Deceptive practice beyond the regular checkups. Manipulative and hidden prices just like a used car dealership. Wellness exam price is $98.50 (which I didn't come in for). Drove 2 hrs for a medical emergency they falsely advertised. Story: I frantically called for a rabies check on a kitten I found in my backyard that bit me hard. The receptionist put me on hold to check if they are able to check for rabies. He then set up an emergency checkup the same week and confirmed this is for rabies. I received an email confirmation stating "medical" appointment. Of course I tried getting another vet that may take me sooner and all stated rabies tests aren't available without brain tissue. But this facility stated they could do some check (vague). I also asked the price and he was very vague (around $80 he said). During the appointment, the vet stated they don't do rabies check. I asked why I'm here and she stated for a regular checkup. No other conversation in regards to the medical issue of why I came was brought up. I came in for an emergency medical check on rabies, was instead treated for a regular exam (ear check, weight, and temperature) and was charged $100. I already had the kittens checked so I didn't need another wellness exam. I also didn't need to drive 2 hrs roundtrip to this facility. The receptionist should have truthfully told me this procedure isn't possible.

If you want your pet to be properly cared for this is the place! 💓 My beloved cat of seven years had to be put down due to her declining health and while that is heavy on the heart coming here made it much less heavy of my situation. I knew that when I had given them my cat, I had put her in good caring hands. It’s very tough losing a best friend but the nurses and doctors here were very nice, sympathetic and very professional and I just can’t thank them enough for their amazing work and ability to care for your loved ones. Sympathy is hard to come by now a days at most shelters. Thank you to everyone who made Peeche’s last moments a good and comfortable experience 💗
