How to Save Money at Animal Care & Emergency Services (ACES)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are so lucky to have such a great facility in the middle of our city that’s open 24 hours. I had a foster cat in Sept ‘22 who wasn’t eating or moving — just seemingly frozen in fear. I brought him to ACES where I dropped him off for care. They kept me updated on him and the costs throughout the day. Turns out, he had a skin infection, low fever, compacted feces, and dehydration. Sure, the treatment for all this was expensive, but it wasn’t a surprise, as ACES was so communicative. And I know how much vet care is; I was just thankful I could find a place that could take good care of him when we have a shortage of vets! When I picked him up, they were so kind and talked about what a nice cat he was. They had even decorated his name on a brown bag with his medications! It felt very personal and warm. Since I picked him up late at night, I got a phone call the next day from the vet who went into great detail about his treatment (I wish I could remember her name to thank her for her time!). The quality of care exceeded all my expectations. This was all for a foster cat I knew for about 3 days, but it was so worth it, since he came back to home a different, healthier, and happier cat. And happy ending - I adopted him! He’s nothing like that withdrawn cat I took in almost a year ago. Thank you ACES!

I cannot thank ACES enough. My young dog collapsed out of nowhere and was wholly unresponsive, not breathing, nearly dead. We raced him over to the only place near us that was 24 hours and thank goodness it was aces! They took him immediately and administered all the fluids he needed to reverse the effects of his reaction. They were all so sweet, kind, empathetic, communicative, and most of all, they saved my dogs life. I cannot thank the effort of this team enough. On behalf of myself, Kevin, and Sunny THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAVING OUR BABY’S LIFE!!!!!!! Even after the fact, they’ve continued answer all questions that I have. Please consider them if you’re ever in an emergency. They are truly a blessing.

Professional, timely & compassionate care received from Dr. Highfield & team last night. My cat had an eye swollen shut and Dr. H and her vet tech were great - both with me & with kitty. Receptionist was also nice. Kitty is doing better today and for emergency late-night care I felt the cost was within expectations. We were in & out within the hour. We saw similar quick & compassionate care for two other families that came in while we were there. Thank you very much.

So grateful for ACES and their care. I've had to take my dog here a couple times for emergencies and I've always been so relieved and grateful for their care, concern, and thoroughness. The vets are top-notch and the staff are kind and patient. I would not hesitate to bring my dog back here again if needed. Thank you ACES!

They misdiagnosed then sent my cat home … and it nearly killed him. My cat had a partial urinary obstruction. They put in a catheter, got things moving then sent him home. Not only was the discharge process entirely unprofessional and did little to equip us for what came next but they did not accurately diagnose the underlying cause of the obstruction. Within 48 hours he was completely blocked and in pain. When we called for questions they wouldn’t let us speak with anyone that was qualified to answer some basic questions. We ended up going to Sage instead. That was the best move we could make. Within 24 hours they diagnosed the real cause of the obstruction. The bladder was completely full of a MASSIVE blood clot that could be felt externally via physical exam of the bladder… how ACES let him go home is beyond me. If they took the time to diagnose correctly it would have been a short hospitalization, surgery and 2 week recovery. The extra days it took for the correct diagnosis put my cats life at risk and cost us an additional $15-20k and required an additional 8 days of hospitalization to get him stable as some of his organs were showing signs of shutting down. I cannot speak more poorly of this place. Do not go here.
