How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been taking my three dogs to Vetco since they were puppies. We recently took my pup to a visit for an allergic reaction and vaccinations. I have never had a problem with a family member assisting in taking my pup to the vet before, as I have a very demanding job where days off are nearly impossible. The Vet Technician that assisted my Sister belittled my sister, was very uncompassionate, and was unremarkably rude to me on the phone when my sister called to double check if I wanted a service which only took 1 minute of her time. Unfortunately, although I have been coming here for 9 years.. I reluctantly will discontinue to bring my dogs to this clinic due to this experience.

The entire Vetco process is a sham. The clinic visit was okay and I was able to get care from the vet but the process after for getting and receiving results from the vet visit is dangerous and incompetent. I visited the vet to get shots and a wellness exam for my pet. There was also an infection near my pet's eye that required testing. This was just before a holiday so the results would take about 5 days. That was okay but I called them over a week later about the results and they were not ready and was told the doctor would call back later. Fine. They call back but I miss the call. In the voicemail, they tell me the results and care information to address my pet's infection was sent to my email or to call them back for more info. I called back but no vet is available to take the call (only a scheduling tech?) and I never received the email. I try to give the scheduling person (again, don't know what that means) another email address in case it was wrongly entered (we confirmed the email was correct as well) and tell them to have the vet call me back the next day. They tell me that they will get back in 24hrs. They never call and I never get the email. I call back and ask why no one called and a different scheduling tech (seems Petco outsources vet calls) tells me they are closed?? This was on a Wednesday afternoon. This intermediate employee cannot access the information I need and cannot route me to anyone who can provide assistance. If my pet had a much more serious illness or infection, how could they afford to waste this much time just because I cannot directly contact the vet that looked at my pet? How can a company this large, whose entire premise is loving pets, ignore this massive gap in pet care? Shame on Petco for gating access from the vet to the owner and not providing an easier communication method. Stay away if you ever need real care or attention for your pet.

The 1st time I scheduled my puppy appt, they messed up on the schedule. We had to reschedule. The second time we were 5 min late and they said they have a strict 5 min late policy! We rescheduled again. Fast forward today we rush over to get there 15 min prior to appt time and confirmed via text yesterday for pur appt today and when we arrived the damn VETCO clinic was closed!!!! We did not receive any notification that the "doc" canceled! Horrible

All the ladies with the exception of the vet in charge were friendly, attentive and helpful. It was our first visit with our new puppy (Frenchie) we adopted and when I initially booked the appointment I let them know it was our first time and his first time at the vet with us. We had some questions in regards to what’s normal and what’s not so we were booked a wellness appointment. When the vet came in she was extremely unprofessional in a bad mood loud pitch voice talking super defensive without us saying anything. She told us this was a 15 min appointment and we had to book another appointment one appointment per concern. I then explained to her it was our first appointment and we just wanted to ask about his skin and ears and just have a general checkup to see if his vaccines were up to date. She then proceeded to ramble for about 5 minutes telling us again she’s didn’t have time for this and our dog needed surgery and a bunch of unrelated comments about our dog. She went as far as saying and I quote “ your dog shouldn’t even exist”. This is not a profesional individual and should be talked to about simple manners in dealing with people. I don’t like confrontation nor does my husband so we just payed and left and mentioned to the girl up front that we had a horrible experience and would not be coming back so not to schedule us for a future appointment. I have had dogs in the past and have never had such a bad experience with a vet. This is something that should not happen in your stores given that most of the staff was friendly and helpful. You have lost a customer thanks to this horrible vet lady you have working. I would give you her name but I have forgotten it as I tried to forget the whole encounter. She was an asian female.

NEVER choose Dr Peggy Hsu, a rude and cold blood woman, who blamed us for not training our dog well just because our dog acted super excitedly to her. She has no patience for us and just continued blaming us throughout the checking process! We asked her questions and she just took all blame on us for not training our dog well. We asked about the benefit of the neuter and she said" Neuter would not improve your dog's behaviour", and then continued to blame us just because our dog acted excited. And when we asked for the cons, she answered carelessly" there are no cons ". We paid money to get a professional consultant and not paid money to get blamed and OFFENDED! She should definitely consider HER attitude toward her customers. And the fact is we trained our dog every day! And he's a puppy! It is normal for a puppy to act excitedly. She even blamed us for shaving our dog! WHAT A NON SENSE. She has no qualifications to become a doctor, unprofessional and rude. Try to learn YOUR BASIC manner toward your customers then come to work in a service industry. We will NEVER waste our money to get ridiculed!!! Very disappointed!!!
