How to Save Money at VCA Main Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is a price gouging review. Our dog had a diagnosis of parasites. The next day the medicine was ready, I stopped by to pick up. It was 7 packets of powder and was $44. I thought that was a little expensive but figured that might be the normal price, so I payed it. Our dog didn't take 2 of the 7 packets due to not eating the meal it was put in. My wife asked the vet for 2 more packets. So the following week, I stop and pick up the 2 packets. They wanted to charge me $44. I told the gal up front that I payed $44 last week for 7, why is it the same price for 2! She goes back for an answer and comes back to tell me that it's a dispensary charge. What! So the price is the same if it's 2 or 7 packets. She just said that's what they told her in the back. I finally noticed the container had a qty:8 on it. I brought that to her attention but she didn't have much to say. I left fearing my anger was going to make me do something. My wife calls them later that day about it and they said that $10 will be returned to my card. Really? Why the hell didn't they do that when I was there. Thx front desk gal, you're a pathetic excuse for a helpful worker. I believe they are nickle and diming people.

Ain’t what it used to be. Miss Drs Kelly and Schroeder. Always outrageously expensive thanks to its VCA affiliation. I wish Bond Veterinarian would open here in San Diego. If it’s gotta be corporate care, we need a better option than VCA, Vetco and Banfield.

I scheduled a check up as my puppy has been scratching his ears and showing signs of an ear infection. After just a few minutes of being in the room, Dr. Tugend hit my teething 6 month old puppy Koda (Rottweiler). This treatment towards my dog was in no way comforting and only excited him more. Dr. Tugend then degraded Koda by saying how aggressive he was and how we needed to correct him by hitting him or spraying with him water and vinegar. He then brought him to a back room to be “held down” so that he can inspect his ears. This saddens me as if Dr. Tugend had even the slightest bit of patience, he would have learned there are simpler and more effective methods to calm and inspect Koda. Once Koda was brought back to our room, Dr. Tugend began by telling me how much of a problem dog he thinks I have and how I should have been putting tobacco sauce on my hands, hitting him, and spraying him since he was a puppy. This advise is extremely unnecessary and cruel as he later admitted that Koda is a teething puppy and this is only normal behavior for teething puppies (which Koda is!). I informed him how we have received professional training guidance which recommends to NEVER use this type of negative reinforcement. Koda has been making great progress at home and together we will continue to work towards becoming a distinguished gentleman (: Although I feel as if I spent $100 to be humiliated instead of medically informed on my puppies ear condition, I do want to thank the front desk staff for being the only kind and friendly aspect of this experience.

Kind and caring staff. Felt welcomed and concerned for our senior dog. Technician was very thorough with getting history and questions. Very informative and thorough exam with Dr. Fields. Manager was very kind to go over costs and options including insurance plans and expectations.

Worst service ever. They visited my kitten and prescribed her medications. She wasn’t improving after 12 days. I walk-in and they sent me home. I booked an appointment I got there 7 minutes late and they told me the doctor wasn’t able to see me because I was late and to come back in the afternoon. If you care for your pet don’t go there. Staff wasn’t helpful. Apparently one of their doctors tells the patients to come back without appointment if the medication he prescribes doesn’t work, but then you discover that this doctor is not the main one and you need an appointment so they send you home if you do what he says. And worst even with an appointment if you are 7 minutes late they are not going to visit your pet. Unacceptable service.
