How to Save Money at Point Loma Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Went here for years, horrible vet. Diagnosed or dog with arthritis at age 2; switched vets after a few years and climbing med costs. Found out she had a torn ccl that was unchecked for years due to the vet; new vet said she didn't check because she uses outdated xrays. Also diagnosed our dog with food allergies and after thousands of dollars in prescribed kibble, we found out through the new vet and their diet plan, that was false. Plus, one of the meds the vet prescribed, remedyl, is VERY bad for dogs; new vet and nurses urged us to stop and use more natural/healthy meds. New meds work just fine. Mind you, this is after me and my wife insisted on more hoilstic natural approaches before the use of heavy meds since the dog was a pup. The fact that the person running the Google reviews takes the time to shame pet owners and not keep their information personal is appauling. Shame on this establishment! Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Amazing. Left my previous vet because her people skills were more than lacking, found Point Loma Veterinary and have had nothing but pleasant experiences since. They actually seem to care about my dog, my concerns as her mom, and are conscious of my budget when recommending medications etc. Love them!

I have never been to a cleaner, better smelling vet clinic. Dr. Cardeiro was excellent with our dog and with me! She answered all my new mom questions with care and patience. Thank you!!!

I would not recommend this vet office based on our 3 previous experiences. It is unfortunate because the first time my husband brought our cat in to be seen, he had a very good experience. However the last two times we have interacted with this vet have been disappointing. Red Flag No. 1: At the first visit, the vet prescribed some flea medication for our cat and it seemed to help her. After the 3 months of medication ran out, I called to get the prescription refilled. I specifically asked if we would need to bring her in again to refill it. They initially told me, "no problem, you don't need to bring her in, we'll get the vet to sign off on it and we'll give you a call tomorrow when it's ready to pick up". I didn't receive a call so a couple days later I called again and they said that the vet hadn't had a chance to sign off on the paperwork. I waited about 4 more days before calling again, and this was when they decided to tell me that she would actually need to be not just brought in, but also needed to have additional shots / vaccines in order for them to prescribe the flea medication. As this was the first I was hearing of this I was taken aback and now a week had passed by the time I got this information. I relayed that and the receptionist said she would call me back. When she did, she said the vet would actually sign off on it without us bringing her in. Red Flag No. 2: Our cat started to experience some further skin issues so my husband made an appointment for 3pm today. He arrived early, and initially checked in with the receptionist who started to check him in, got interrupted by a man asking for a carrier, she went to the back without finishing checking in my husband. This took a very long time, about 10 minutes just to get the carrier for this other customer. Then they put him in the waiting room where he proceeded to wait for an hour without being seen. Eventually he left due to the exceptionally long wait and lack of communication. It seems to me there is overall a severe lack of communication between staff and then also with customers, and from reading the review responses from the owner, a lack of accountability or willingness to see the failings going on here. We will be taking our pets elsewhere. UPDATE: They still are incredibly unhelpful a year later, can’t even refill a flea medication without an in person exam… it’s literally flea medication.

Do not go here. “ANOTHER UPDATE !!” The “doctor” You are a bold face li ar ! I did wait close to 3 hours in the room after my appoint. 1.! And 2. You 100% refused to sell me the meds! You wanted to charge me $70 just to clean my dogs ears, I said I would do that my self which I did in 10 minutes then applied the meds I bought from a much better vet. And yes that is what I paid for my visit they then they gave me a prescription that I filed at Costco and $80 later my dog is 100% fine now. You are a cro ok and a la ir and I will be filing a complaint as well as reporting you for malpractice. Is incompetent and only wants to pull money out of your wallet . I sat in the room for 2 1/2 hours after my appointment before getting seen for my dog Only for them to constantly sell me up on things and then refused to give me medication for my dogs. Urinary tract infection, because I refuse to buy other medication’s unrelated to the issue. Absolutely do not come here complete incompetence and bad business practice “”” I walked out after waiting 2.5 hours in the room after my appointment, you refused to give my dog her antibiotics if I didn’t pay for everything, the bill was $570 for antibiotics and a check up, every time I questioned you, or ask questions as to why she need some thing, and what the course of action is, you took offense to it gave me a strange look in a snarky answer. I walked out since you’re forcing me to pay $570 for something I did not want to, and refused to give me the medication’s that I came for . I actually found a much better vet. My total bill was $195. I was in and out in 20 minutes. Everybody was super nice not to mention they have also heard bad things about your office as well as had employee that used to work for you and they mentioned people don’t stay with you long. It’s time to retire you’re out of your element and you extort your customers.
