How to Save Money at NEST Veterinary Neurology - Michelle Murray DVM MS DACVIM (Neurology) CCRT

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Murray opened her practice on an off day just to see our little Max. Although his injury was not able to be helped with surgery, her kindness saved him from a weekend of suffering. Her office staff was also so sensitive and caring. Although it wasn't the ending I would have hoped for, she was honest with her prognosis and recommendations. Even allowed the family to come in for a last goodbye - he was loved, and they allowed us to make sure he knew he was loved to the very end.

Dr. Michelle Murray is Outstanding Neurologist, she is extremely knowledgeable with a lot of patience. She has a HEART of GOLD. Our Sweet Walter (thank to amazing Stuff) is doing well. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping Our Little Boy. Robert and Vishka McIntyre.

Word cannot express how extremely happy we are with Dr.Murray. Our 7 lbs Maltese was unable to walk or move. Dr. Murray performed an amazing surgery and brought my Princess back to us. She is now walking on her own and going outside to play. I do not know what we would have done without Dr. Murray. Highly recommend Dr. Murray and worth every dollar to have our furry family member back home.

If Dr. Murray ever decided to take GP patients we would drive from Rancho Cucamnga to San Clemente to see her. I train aggressive dogs and have a personal protection Rottie, and have had difficulty finding Dr.s who will work with me and my dogs, understanding that they are not pets, or that they need a certain format of handling to have a successful visit. My 2.5 year old Rottweiler, Stormy had a laminectomy last Tuesday. Dr. Murray was incredibly compassionate and respectful of my girl's needs and what was best for her. She spoke candidly with me regarding her procedure, answered (and is still answering) my multitude of questions patiently, and formulated a pre, intra, and post surgical procedure that was most conducive to my dog's well being, including myself in the process. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me to know that while my girl was going a through a major procedure I felt I could trust the people taking care of her. It is a feeling that has been missing from my veterinary experiences as of late. Storm's surgery went well, her surgery site is as beautiful as one can be, she was NOT stressed when I picked her up and her recovery is going well. She was ambulatory pre-surgery and Dr. Murray has been in close contact to see how she is fairing, and even to help me feel less insane trying to take care of a very athletic, young dog on cage rest. Dr. Murray is an asset to this industry and we need more DVM's like her.

After my old Westy suffered a back injury from an accident, Dr. Murray and her hospital helped me understand what was going wrong and what could be done about it in the most competent, compassionate manner possible under the circumstances. Her hospital is beautiful, modern and immaculate which further enhanced my sense of comfort in a highly stressful moment. After the complete evaluation we elected not to move forward with surgery due to heart complications; but I would have felt I was in supremely competent hands had that course of action been required. I highly recommend Nest.
