How to Save Money at River City Cat Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Called at 8 am about my buddy Rocco. They got me in at 10 am. Dr. Lara took great care with Rocco and we know he is in good hands.

I put my name on the waitlist at least 1.5 years ago. I was calling in 2023 to check where I was in the waitlist and they found my name in the list but kept telling me it’ll be March 2023. March 2023 came and gone and I received no notification. I called today to ask where I was on the list and lo and behold—-my name is not on it. Why? Where was the email that says I didn’t make it to the list. I was told if I go to the website it says closed. Do you really think people just sit at their Computer refreshing the page to see if the waitlist is closed months ago??? Correct business etiquette would be TO NOTIFY them by email which I asked—and they said yes we did notify everyone on the list. So where was mine??? I checked my email for the notification they supposedly sent but the last email was from June 2022 saying Happy Birthday to my now peacefully sleeping cat. I was calling to find out where I was on the list so I can take my other cat there instead of VCA since they specialize in feline care. I’m so frustrated right now and the only cop out they have was “you’re not on either 2021 or 2022 list”. What were all those phone calls I made months ago and I was told I should be in March 2023 then? Was I hallucinating when I made those calls?

We have taken our guy, Lucky to River City since we found him under a piece of plywood in our backyard. He and a sister of his were the only ones of a litter of 7 or 8 to survive. They were covered in bugs and starving. Lucky had bugs in his left eye and was constantly shivering. His sister died the next night, but Lucky was too tough to give up. We took him to River City and they worked on him for over a week. We all expected him to die. We knew he would be blind. That was 18 years ago this coming June 5th. He is blind in his left eye, but he just refused to go away. He would have been a great Marine, although he's a real scardy cat, but he's my buddy! The wife kind of likes him too. I don't think she's too sure about me though! I cannot recommend River City Cat Clinic any higher than an absolute 10 out of 10!

Called to make an appointment for my cat who is very sick, but they couldn't find my account. Admittedly, it's been a few years since I've taken him in, and because of that, they purged us from their system and deemed me a new client, but, they won't accept new clients so they wouldn't help my cat or allow me to book with them. With literally ZERO empathy for the situation they forced me to find a new vet. They are right near my home so I was very disappointed. One of the reasons I didn't bring my cat there as often as I should have is because of their prices, they're very high, it seems their ethics and customer service are just as disappointing.
