How to Save Money at Wildwood Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough good things about this hospital. The doctors and staff are all personable and knowledgeable, while maintaining the height of professionalism. I worked in a veterinary hospital for 13+ years, and I have also been to my fair share of vets, and I have to say that Wildwood stands out above all others in every way. Dr Sanders—the owner of the practice—can only be described as top notch in his field. He is positive, genuine, and is a very good listener. His positivity and remarkable skills seem to have created a work space in which every employee has the opportunity to become their best professional self. I am very grateful to be able to partner with Wildwood in giving my many pets the chance to live their healthiest lives. Thank you!

Dr Peak is by far the best pocket pet vet in the area. After seeing 4 different vets last year for my guinea pig who needed an emergency spay (ovohysterectomy), Dr Peak was the only vet skilled enough and comfortable enough to do it. I have no doubt it saved my guinea pig’s life. Since then, all 3 of my guinea pigs have seen her multiple times, including another one’s necessary spay. The staff here is always great, and everyone seems to really truly be fond of my girls.

The front desk people are the rudest I’ve ever seen! I never take my cats back here. It goes back to a month back when my cat was having diarrhea and I called them to set up an appointment. They said bring a sample of her poop and we’ll run a test. I stoped by with my cat a few days later while I was expecting a call from them on my cat’s test result. Once I arrived, they said we did not run the test because we were waiting for the payment.😳I was like why did not you call me then or I could pay you the day I stop by with the sample. Immediately after they placed a $1800 bill in-front of me to make a payment while I still had my cat with me. They just said this is for the check up and the test. I was like you were supposed to do the test a few days ago and the doctor has not seen my baby yet. How did you come up with this number? They went in and came back with a new bill about $1500 or so with another vague explanation which did not make sense. Surprisingly it was not the end. Long story short, I came back home and I had to go back there to pick up my cat. My cat was under so much stress after we arrived home there that she has never been. And eventually the doctor did not check her up! Please do not take your pet here! They are not trustworthy at all!!

Really friendly staff, and you can tell they all really care for every animal that comes through. Dr. Chris was the absolute BEST. I am so happy I came. I ended up having to put one of my scaley children on antibiotics and Iris was so helpful in teaching me how to administer the shots. A big thank you to everyone there! I truly am thankful for their kindness.

I took my rabbits to be checked and the male to be neutered. They were super helpful getting me an appointment for this since we were in a rush moving to another country. My bunny was well and treated incredibly. The wrong thing was that the week before the procedure, in the checkup, we were quoted about $250 for the procedure. After the procedure we were charged $450, the gas, the medicine, this and that… more expensive than most places in the Bay Area. Happy my beautiful bunny is healthy.
