How to Save Money at VIP Petcare Wellness Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give zero stars I would. I took my large breed dog to the Montclair location this past Saturday and was extremely disappointed by the experience. The gentleman checking us in this very kind and efficient— he was the best part of this experience. The problems started once we met with the veterinarian. The veterinarian immediately was uncomfortable with the number of vaccines my dog was scheduled to receive. She is the expert so I had no problem removing the non-essential vaccines but I found the vet’s tone to be extremely aggressive, condescending, and unwarranted given the situation. From there, the experience went down hill. My dog tends to be nervous around new people so I opted to have her muzzled for her vaccines. Given that this is the first time she has ever been muzzled you would think that this would instill a sense of urgency for the veterinarian to get the vaccines done as quickly as possible. Instead, the veterinarian and vet tech did a terrible job of handling my pet. My dog was uncomfortable, and instead of taking a moment to understand her limitations and handle her appropriately and safety, the vet tech and veterinarian decided to try and pin my dog down. This only caused my dog to fight back harder out of fear. It was incredibly disturbing to watch and I offered to hold my dog for them only for the vet tech to snap back that it was against policy and I could take my business elsewhere if that was an issue (mind you she was still trying to wrangle my dog as she’s saying this). I immediately told her that I understand if that’s policy and maybe they should consider a different approach with handling my dog rather than two grown people trying to pin her to the ground. The worst part about all of this is it seemed they reluctantly agreed to me showing them the best way to hold my dog to safety administer the vaccines. Aren’t they suppose to be the experts ?? And if they are unsure why would they not ASK or welcome my input ?? All in all, this appointment should’ve been no longer than 5 minutes but took at least double that. I have been to other vaccine clinics before and never had this issue and I am sorry to have put my dog through this horrible, stressful experience. I will never bring my dog back here and will warn other pet owners with the experience I had.

The staff is great. The veterinarian is very knowledgeable. They were able to respond to all my needs in one visit. The pricing is very affordable.

The veterinarian at the Oakland wellness center is phenomenal. She takes her time to check over each and every puppy I bring in looking for any issues that may be present on the exam. She is very thorough with each one and documents fully her findings. I recommend this location in order to obtain fantastic services from the vet there.

It was ok experience. I needed my dogs to get heartworm tests and meds. I don't have much time and being able to just drop in was a life saver. My schedule is not always the same and varies all the time. It's hard to make appointments because of that. I usually take her to a different clinic but they now require appointments. They said they needed to do a wellness exam since it was her first time there. It cost way more than I expected because of it and it's lucky I had the money to cover it. So the convenience was good but the surprise of having to pay more because of a wellness exam I was not too crazy about. I know when my dogs are sick and if she had been would have taken her to another vet clinic. I use the vaccinations clinics to save time and money. I understand when taking my pets to a vet like the VCA or other ones with high tech equipment I'll have to pay high prices because of the machines they have that cost a lot to buy and maintain. But this clinic is not equiptment for serious emergencies. My cat had a cardiologist. That I expect to pay top dollar for but not vaccinations or tests. I am disappointed they are not straight forward in the advertisements about what they do and how much they will charge. I probably won't use there services anymore because of the fact they are not as straight forward and I didn't know about the wellness exam before I got there. I like to know what I'm getting into before making a trip.

Great team at this location! They took care of all the vaccinations my dog needed and did everything quickly and efficiently. I was tired of calling many places and looking for appointments and it was such a relief to get my dog taken care of by such an excellent team. Highly recommended!
