How to Save Money at Dermatology for Animals - Oakland

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had an excellent experience here. The team was thorough, knowledgeable and caring. They were wonderful with my dog, who gets nervous at vet visits. They did everything to make sure he had a positive experience, while giving him the best medical treatment.

I was referred here to follow up on my pups ear infection. I was quoted a price for the Exam, cytology, plus meds. After the exam, my bill was over $900… When I questioned the tech as to why I was charged hundreds extra to look inside her ear & not quoted the price on that she said she would have to speak with upper management about it. She then came back & told me it was the “wrong one” which lowered my bill to $717. The vet was kind but my pup has Many serious issues that she sees Internal Medicine for in SF & I’ve never been charged so outrageously for such a simple problem. So sadly I can’t afford. to return here for another follow up. Side note: I thought they were so kind to offer to trim her nails & they charged $39 for it. Silly me.

We have been customers for 3 years and we still are customers of D4A. We’ve been seen here many times, seen different doctors, did both a blood test and a skin test, and have a semi-weekly injection (immunotherapy) for 1 of our bred dogs. We’ve spent over $5,000 with this location. While we love and appreciate Dr. Schick out of Arizona (the founder), the Oakland location has been a disappointing experience. I have learned that one’s experience with D4A is dictated by the location specifically so I advise you to do your research around the Bay. Shoutout to Tricia in Walnut Creek for being so kind and helpful, as well as Scottsdale admin. Here in Oakland, the administration staff has been consistently unkind and unhelpful over these 3 years. It has been consistent across multiple people. You’d think it wouldn’t matter, but, ultimately the front desk holds the keys to your dogs health here. Long ago, we also started with a JARRING experience with Dr Hudec (who now runs Campbell), but this location is now run by Dr Yamazaki so the review is not reflective of the new doctor herself nor her technicians. This review is 100% awkward for us because we will undoubtedly have to come in again for our pups health, but I end up crying every time I have to talk to the Oakland office so I hope this is seen and feedback is received.

This is one of the best vet experiences I have ever had. My 5y/o german shepherd with awful allergies got a gnarly staph infection that went on & on for almost 3 months. But the doctor and his amazing crew took the best care of Ohtryx and finally got him back on track, allergies in check and staph infection gone. It was a real struggle, painful to watch, but I couldn't be more grateful to them for bringing back my goofy pal to his old self (even better!).

TLDR: Helped my dog's allergies after years of trying to get in under control, and cleared up an ongoing infection. Went to this place in mid December for my dogs skin infection. I have a German Shepherd that's had an ongoing skin problem for the last 3 years. After seeing 3 different vets that diagnosed the problem as allergies, but were unable to get it under control with antiobiotics, I was really at my wits end. I was pretty skeptical about seeing a dermatologist because I had already spent almost $1,000 between my other visits with other vets. I tried holistic stuff like Manuka honey at home, which helped but it never got fully better. The team here explained a plan for getting things under control, and during our followup visit we discussed options for keeping the allergies under control so that another infection doesn't break out. The first 4 photos are before, and the last one is after the antibiotic/steroid treatment. It was a very expensive visit, about $500, BUT 100% worth it obviously. In fact, this one visit that actually worked was still cheaper than seeing 3 different vets that weren't specialists. They have different options available that have different price points so that you can do what works best for you and your pet. I also appreciated that the doctor went into detail about which options are most effective, and what potential long term side effects are. The team was also really great with handling my dog! He's 115 lbs and barked like crazy every time they entered the room, so maybe a LITTLE intimidating... But they all loved on him like the big baby he is. His infections look like they are gone and we are currently doing Apoquel to control itching so that the infection doesn't come back.
