How to Save Money at Mission Hills Pet Care Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have no problems with anyone at this establishment, except the owner. Took my 17 year old dog in for a check up for one of her growths / warts. Mind you, she was still very active for her age and was eating, drinking, sleeping, just fine. Extremely playful for a 17 year old dog as well. My dogs usual vet was out of the office and the owner stepped in to fill the duty of the vet for the day I guess. Red flag #1 was when this man showed up over an hour late for an appointment and strolled in as if he didn’t just make us wait in a building with no AC during a heatwave. When he finally decided he took enough of his sweet time, he came in to check on my dog and then he asked the usual vet questions. Once he felt he had enough information he took her to the back to get a more in depth look at her and this is when things took a turn for the worst. Without asking us, or consenting with us, consulting us, or literally without doing anything, he decided to give my dog a steroid shot. My 17 year old, 10 pound dog a steroid shot. He brought her back to me and told me what he had done and I was visibly puzzled but I didn’t really know what I could do at that point the damage had been done. What was the shot even for? She just had some skin irritation. What if I couldn’t afford the cost of the shot? Apparently he does this so often that the staff is aware of it and they claim there’s nothing they can do cause “he’s the owner”. This moron took my dogs life. She went from being so playful and happy the week prior to her appointment, to being miserable and in so much discomfort almost immediately after the steroid shot. Over the course of the next week she instantly started going downhill. Throwing up, not being able to walk, having blood in her fecal matter. It got to the point where we had no choice but to put her down. After getting several other opinions from other vets they all agreed that the steroid shot was the cause of all of this and I truly hope the owner of this place rethinks his career cause he’s a clown. Had I known this idiot was going to do that I would have never let him give her a steroid shot and she would still be here with me today.

Dr. Kelly and her staff are simply amazing. We have been taking our pets here for years. We love and trust them 💯 and have brought many unusual cases to diagnose. 😁 Hands down best vet clinic here in South OC.

Highly recommend this vet for your fur babies! I reached out to them when our smallest cat came into our life. She desperately walked on up looking for help. I called around for any vet that would see me right away as I knew she needed help and they were the only ones in the area to fit me in on such late notice. All the staff here are great in their roles, personable, caring, and take their time with you and your pet. They care so much that they recommended I waited a couple extra weeks before starting vaccines to make sure our little one was well enough to handle them. It was nice to have a vet that cared more about their health. I had vets in the past that would rush the vaccine process. Our little one needed iv fluids, eye drops, de-wormmer, and flea meds. My husband and I were a little bit afraid of the bill but they actually didn't overcharge like other places we have gone to in the past. We loved this place so much we ended up bringing in our other cat for a check-up and medication. Both cats are doing great. Our little one only weighed 1 pound when we brought her and now is up to 3 pounds and living her best life. We will be going back to get her spayed when the time is right. They work with an animal hospital nearby if your animal has any reactions in the night. I haven't been there but I'm sure they are great if they are recommending them. This vet also works with the nerby shelter and does spayed and neutering for them. Pro: affordable, caring, professional, experts, reasonable Con: nothing
