How to Save Money at Long Beach Animal Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My wife and I made the very, very difficult decision to put our family member, protector, loyal and companion down. The silence of his bark is "DEAFENING". I can't say enough about the staff. They were compassionate, concern and caring. From the time we arrived and until we left, they were by our side. The doctor that spoke with us was as professional as a professional can be. He was very thorough, caring and compassionate and explained our options. He explained that the final decision was ours. I wanted to spend the last minutes of my pet's life with him but the pain was too great! My wife decided that it would be too great of a pain to watch him through the process. He tried to come back to me when the nurse took him to the back. Thank you is too weak of a word or phrase to say how much the hospital and staff treated us and our beloved pet. Stitch was a great family member and he was 10 ½ years old. If you need a quality, professional pet hospital please take your pet to them. Thank you again!

We had a great visit. Everyone was very transparent and honest about what was happening and the costs associated. My dog was sick for four days and another Animal Hospital had already given us very poor service. But just hours after our visit my dog had already shown great signs of improvement!! And they called to follow up!

My dog broke her leg around 9:45 pm Saturday night. Went to VCA Lakewood and they would not see her due to an hour wait and only one doctor. Went to Long Beach Animal Emergency. They took her back as soon as we got there. Another critical animal came in right after us that required surgery. We were told it could be up to a 6 hour wait as they too only had one Dr in that night. That we could wait or call around to see if someone else could get her in sooner. We chose to wait and it was about 2 hours before we talked to anyone. Agreed to X-ray and they gave us option to go home and wait for their call as the radiologist report takes about 2 hours. Dr called an hour later and told us what she saw but still waiting on report. That they could put a splint on but we would need to find a specialist on Monday to confirm if surgery is needed or not. Hour later they called back that our dog was ready for pick up. Point is, they followed through on everything they said they would do and in the timeframe given. The staff was very caring and kind even though I was a little frantic at first. They put me at ease and I’m so glad we waited. She was in good hands. I also received a follow up call Monday morning to see how my dog was. They sent me all my records same night as the visit so I could share with a specialist. Overall I would go back in a heartbeat if we have another emergency.

My cat was in so much pain and I couldn’t wait a day to take him to his checkup, so I went to the emergency and I’m so glad I did. They took care of him right away. He had a feline urethral obstruction. Everyone there was so empathetic and supportive. The doctor was so kind and helpful. She informed me on what’s happening and what they will be doing, she did not leave anything out. They did what they can to work around my budget. It was honestly such a relief that he’s okay now. They are absolutely amazing and will reassure you. My baby boy is better because of them.

Came in on a Friday night. My cat was seen with 5 minutes. The vet, Dr. Zamora, was amazing and explained everything. She took the conservative approach rather than racking up an unnecessary bill. The staff was very nice. The facility is clean and pleasant. If I could get human healthcare here, I would come here as a patient. 😁
