How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have attempted to schedule my dog to get 1 shot 4 separate times. I arrived to day for the 4th time and they told me the vet is on lunch and that they can do her shots an hour and 15 minutes later. This is ridiculous. I wold recommend going anywhere but here

I have had a plan at this banfield for about 2 1/2 years. I've taken my dog Bella in many times here and most recently within the last year they have showed they don't care about you or your pet. Firstly I had taken Bella in to get a regular exam/checkup to get updated on shots. They preformed an "eye pressure test" witch they didn't include in the coversation in what they would be doing that day. They scratched both of her eyes while doing it causing obvious pain and discomfort when I took her home she could barley open here eyes. I took her back so they can do something about it. Firstly they had no intention of saying they scratched her eyes, they said they think it was my dog "rubbing her eyes" she was already squinting before leaving the store. When I brought her back they had zero intention of admitting that they did It so that I had to pay for the ointment and cone they made me take home witch came to about 50-60 dollars . Nothing but a cash grab with people that don't wanna take liability. Now that's what led me to want to cancel my plan. A little more than a year ago I had gotten the upgraded plan for x rays and extra things because my dog was pregnant it came to $80 a month. I asked when we could cancel or switch plans. The person that signed us up said that after 1 year you will be able to cancel or switch back plans. That's pretty much all he said, but when I called to cancel my plan they claimed I still need to pay $1500 (the remainder of the plan?) I had herd nothing about this and have my mom as a witness to that. The person at the desk CLEARLY said you can cancel after 1 year but I guess these banfield stores dont have any integrity, honesty, or any other thing you would want in someone that has your dogs life in their hands.

Avoid at all costs. Been with banfield for more than 5 years and this is the only location that’s ever given us issues regarding professionalism and care for pet. The employees appear to lack training, their internal communication is nonexistent, they are not professional, last minute cancellations (every. Single. Appt. They cancel 2 hours before appt, reschedule, then cancel you again), inability to use care credit, hours listed are not correct, & after the interactions I’ve had with them I worry they are negligent to the animals in their care. Take your pet to a different banfield location & you’ll be fine. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

This is going to be an extensive but thorough review. The Banfield hospital is located inside of Petsmart, they have their own reception area. When you come in you are greeted by friendly assistants. Their check in is pretty quick and easy. Our vet is Dr. Smith and we refuse to see anyone else that isn't her. This woman is pure GOLD! She has seen our golden retriever since she was 8 weeks old, she's now 1 yr 5 months. We bought our golden from craigslist and by the second day she was pooping out her intestines lining. We rushed to her to Banfield and were helped by Dr. Smith. She diagnosed her with CPV, fleas, worms etc. Dr. Smith tested her and talked to us about our options: 1. keep her at the hospital for 24/7 hour care for two days costing around $1,00 or option 2. Taking her home and giving the medicine ourselves, syringe feeding and watching her health, costing us just the medicine. Given we were a young couple with little money we chose option 2. Dr Smith guided us through her care and introduced us to the puppy Wellness plan to save money on future office visits, all vaccines and future spay. Dr. Smith was upfront with us about our puppy having a slim chance of surviving but fought with us to help her survive. Sofie is a strong puppy today because of Dr. Smith. FYI never buy puppies from craigslist :( We ended up spaying our golden so the plan covered that. All our office visits costing $60 are also covered, as well as all her vaccines. We recommend the wellness plan, its about $47/month for puppies and $40/month after they're 1 year old. Dogs are just like tiny babies, if you take good care of them by giving them what they need to grow strong; like their vaccines, brushing their teeth, giving them their heartworm medicine, and fleas medicine, then you wont need to pay for all those high medical expenses because of the neglect. Long story short: Dr Smith: 5 STARS (kind, caring, knowledgeable, intelligent, understanding) Banfield hospital La Jolla : 4 STARS (great location, staffed well, easy to set up quick appointments, most assistants are good, and best because of Dr. Smith). Sofie is our golden retriever you can check out her instagram @sofiethegoldengirl

Took my white Siberian in to update his shots. Everyone was very helpful and nice, from the front desk to the clinical staff. The front desk person was professional. She answered my questions. Overall, it was a good experience. I just think ppl expect the front office staff to be extra friendly. I mean it’s like going to the doctors office for yourself. Do you want someone to be serious and professional, or do you want someone who sounds like the cashier up front to treat your dog medically?? However, I do think they are understaffed just like the Encinitas location, but that’s Banfield’s fault not the doctors or nurses.
