How to Save Money at Beach Garfield Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Began co.ing here in 2019 with my dog Shadow. Shadow died in January 2021 from heart failure, and the staff was so kind and supportive in his final months. Now I bring my reactive pup Penny, and staff has been very supportive and calm, coming to my car to provide care and offering ways to calm her and hold her for her shots.

Went today for an examine to get flea medication. Appointment was scheduled at 4, I got there a bit earlier and I wasn’t helped til 4:40-50. When I called to make the appointment on Saturday the 3rd, I asked how much it would be for the medication/exam and the receptionist said it would be $35 for the exam and if she(my dog) needs the medication, it would be prescribed. So basically no charge for the medication. During the “exam”, the vet was going to check my dogs heart rate and ear temperature, so she asked me to hold her head while she did, and when she couldn’t, she just stopped, didn’t try to do it again like I thought she would, and then just said she doesn’t need the exam. 😂 I was so confused, she proceeded to ask if I wanted the pill for her and if I would like one month or 2 month supply, I then replied with “aren’t you supposed to tell me after you exam my dog to tell if she needs more than one?” then I asked if she’s going to exam her for fleas but she kept confusing me with yes and no, at that point I was so over it, I just told her 2 month supply in case. She replies with “it’ll be $22 for one so for both it comes down to $44” and I thought about what they said on the phone, how it was only for the exam I’d be paying for. So she said that was it and I went to the front office and the receptionist helped me check out. She says “your total is $79”. I asked if it was only the exam id be paying for not the pills and she didn’t even answer me, just a blank stare so I paid anyway. Aside from all that I’ve taken my dog here before for a spay and it went well for a good price but I’m not sure why this time it seemed like none of the employees knew what they were doing, even the vet. So weird.

I’ve been taking our dog there since she was a puppy. They’re very friendly and always accessible. The front end staff is truly the best there, they’re very compassionate and always willing to help with your dogs needs. Thank you all so much! 🙏

Go anywhere else if you want your dog to live they only specialize in euthanasia I would give a -5 if I could. Receptionist are great but you come for the VET and she is not compassionate and doesn’t seem qualified or educated in any way and is very incompetent. Took my senior dog in she would not even look at him and only repeated multiple times she WANTS TO PUT HIM DOWN and that’s all she will do for him she said he probably wouldn’t even live past her shift - NEWS FLASH ITS BEEN WEEKS AND HE IS STILL HERE. She also had her staff continue to call me to put him down even after we said we were leaving and would not be doing that he eats plays and gets up on his own , why would she put down an innocent dog and how many others has she murdered bc of pure laziness or lack of actual training to help. They also put my hundred pound dog in a room so small he couldn’t turn around !!! Months before this we took our pup in for a missing tooth she wouldn’t even look into our puppy’s mouth or come within 5ft of our dog - hello that’s your job but she asked me to inspect my dogs mouth and still charged me an exam fee. At first I thought maybe she didn’t want to get bit but after taking in our other dog it shows she actually doesn’t know what she’s doing and doesn’t care - please do not take your dog here there’s a new vet at 5 points plaza !

DO NOT let looks deceive you. This is by far the best Vet in OC. Pricing is amazing, and the staff will go above, and beyond to help your fur baby. My dog caught parvo they not only walked me through step by step process to attack the virus but the Dr. would call me multiple times a day and afterhours from his cell to ask for updates and give advise. My dog is on the mend and is going to make it. They are hands down the best.
