How to Save Money at VCA Mission San Jose Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

There are not transparent with their pricing, we brought our puppy there and told them we are interested in puppy wellness plan. They said they need to do an exam first and then gave us an itemized price, we were not aware that they charged ~$120 for an 5 mins exam, and I don’t understand why they can’t give us the cost estimate upfront and put everything on the table, we ended up paying that visit fee but did nothing.

Our experience was very pleasant, the doctor was patient and took the time to explain everything to us.

Brought my dog here to get diagnosed, I talked to the doctor about the tests they needed to do and the type of medication they prescribe. Since they did the tests, "they found what caused the issue" from what they told us and we started giving our dog the medication prescribed. The lady that comes out to help us she was inpatient with our questions and had a bad attitude by the way. Bottom line our dog got misdiagnosed after spending lots of money here and at this point we have to find another place that the doctor is more educated and has enough experience. One of the response was "we have to start from somewhere" so what was the diagnosis about based on the tests they did??? Clueless about their job and its possible they don't even care in the first place.

The last time I called, will be the main reason why I never come back. I spent far too much money on my cat’s “treatment” that really had no merit to begin with, and after taking her to Aborn Pet Hospital, I don’t feel comfortable ever bringing her back to VCA. I spent more money and wasted time getting opinions from VCA, and after taking my baby to Aborn, she’s gotten much better in the past two days, than ever before. Ax exam fee w/ appointment costs $103 here, and an exam w/ appointment costs $67. Huge difference there. Not to mention when they discharged my pet, there was absolutely no discharge papers and they seemed baffled at what discharge paperwork even was. Just a reciept with a total of what I spent. And when my cat was being seen, I heard a lady vet laughing at my cat in a back room, while she was scared. Further more I spent all that money on just an antibiotic shot she didn’t even need, because they refused to do a urinalysis on my cat without sedation- she would not need either, as proved by Aborn Pet Hospital. VCA Mission San Jose is a scam. The “manager” at VCA would not help me when i called last time crying, because I didn’t know which pet hospitals or vets around were low or no cost (since I am unemployed and cannot afford it), she was extremely rude and before I finally hung up on her, she basically yelled at me saying “What? You don’t own a smartphone to look that up on? I’m busy, figure it out!” So all in all, I refuse to ever spend another $280 at VCA and get no help at all. Ridiculous treatment, and even more ridiculous “management”. Done with this place and their horrible staff. Listen to the 1-star reviews, and also notice how their last 5-star review was a whole year ago. Don’t bring your pet here. lastly, to VCA: what resolution? you never even tried to help me or ever contacted me back to resolve this issue.
