How to Save Money at Animal Health & Surgery Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They were wonderful here. I was happy to see Dr. Garrison. She was my Vet for a few years at Myrtle Ave Vet. She also did some emergency services on my Aussies, when she had her emergency Vet clinic in Eureka. I really admire her and she has a genuine caring soul. I was in a stressful time of my life and my elderly dog got ill and needed to be put down. I usually go to Broadway Animal Hospital in Eureka. Well a friend highly recommended this office. I called and got a quote. It was $100 less to have my little dog put down and cremated , then it was at Broadway Animal. Since I was having financial hardships and going through a major life change. I decided to take my good friends advice and take him there. I was immediately greeted by staff and it made me feel special and know that they really cared about my dog and my grieving. A Vet tech immediately came into the room. No waiting at all. He was kind and sweet as ever. Then Dr. Garrison walked in. Oh I was so relieved to see her. She remembered me and I then felt at ease. They did the procedure and he went to sleep and it was very peaceful. I had him wrapped in a blanket that my Great Grandmother crocheted and myself and my older sister and my 2 daughters were brought home from the hospital in it. When he passed in my arms on my chest, he had soiled the blanket. Dr. Garrison told me they would wash it and make sure it was given to me with his ashes, when they were to be picked up. As I was standing in line to pay the bill. I had my sunglasses on and tears rolling down my cheeks. A nice young woman walked into the office and came up to me and just hugged me. It was so sweet. Then another woman in the office with her cat came over and did the same. It was a blessing and made me realize there are strangers who still care.

Dr. Garrison and her staff at Riverwalk are excellent. They take the time to listen to their customers, and they treat their animal patients with the utmost kindness and compassion. I can't thank them enough for the excellent care they gave to my little Chihuahua, Chickie. I give them FIVE stars!!!

Dr. Garrison is a very professional DVM. Every move she makes is in the best interest of her patient. She explains details in laymen terms so you don't have to guess and this gives you options if there are any. I wouldn't take my animals to another Vet in our Valley because she is the very best at what she does. She has saved the life of one of my dogs and has compassionately put down two others making it an experience of just going to sleep. Very caring Vet, with your animal the focal point!

The veterinarian and staff at Riverwalk Veterinarian Hospital have been nothing but amazing to us and have always done their best to go above and beyond. They truly care about the animals, and also about real life and you. They are in this business for the right reasons and it shows with their intentions. I highly recommend this business.

Thank you Dr Garrison, Amy, and Brandon. Regarding the euthanasia of Charmin. You handled my cat, Charmin, and myself with compassion, and professional care. My experience was made as good as could be, and things went very well. She is now part of a garden, in Loleta. I appreciate it. Steve Crane
